What is an acceptable finish for the Swans in 2005

Just trying to get a sence of supporters expectation
as well as their sence of outrage !
The Swans went 11 3 and 5 (was it ?) in the past 3 yrs.
What is an acceptable finish next year ?
Will you be happy if they finish top 8 ? top 4 ? or only with the flag ?
will you be ok if they fall down the ladder to outside the top 8 ? what if they fell to the bottom 4 would you have any sence of outrage at all?
Or will you just go on supporting and loving them no matter what ?

Given it's our third full year under Roos, I think a top 4 finish is a necessity. In finals, I think an absolute minimum is to make the preliminary final, and preferably win that.

I'm not sure that you have to pick only one of those.

I'll be mad as hell if I didn't think that the selection policies, coaching moves, player efforts or general commitment from the players/club were up to the high standards I expect.

But that doesn't mean I'll stop supporting the club because I'm dissatisfied with the results.

If your ONLY goal in supporting the club is to win, then I'd suggest that you're following football for the wrong reasons.

As NW says, a top 4 finish should be the expectation, considering our relatively strong finishes the last 2 years. Our potential is good, and I'd be very disappointed if we haven't managed to gain a little more consistency over what has been shown lately.

Perhaps not quite a sence (sic) of outrage, but I'd be asking questions if it becomes clear that we're no closer to a flag after 3 years of planning.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Would be happy with a top 6 finish and a finals victory.

IMHO, far more important this year is that the following happens which set the base for us in the future:

              a) McVeigh is considered good enough by years end to hold down a starting midfield spot

              b) Both Malceski, Dempter (and to a lesser extent M Davis) break into the side and play a half dozen games each

              c) LRT, Powell & James all progess enough to be considered our starting three tall defenders in 2006

              d) Scheinder gets over his injuries and shows that 2003 was not just a luky year

              e) Both Willoughby & Schmidt are pushing very hard for a senior game by years end

              f) Jolly to be as good as we hope and to bring the best out of Doyle (who is very close to producing what we know he is capable of)

If that all happens then we can consider the year to be succesful and have built a good enough squad to really challenge for a premiership in 2006, 7 & 8.

A top four finish, anything less is unsatisfactory. With the list we have,we should be finishing in the top four every year.Only time will tell.
Well done Craig Bolton for getting the co- captaincy in 2008.

Your determination, your tenacity and your under-rated skill is why you have become my favourite player!

I think only a Top Two finish with two bites of the cherry at home would be acceptable.
We win week 1, week 2 off then win week 3 and a GF appearance ( a win here would be perfect but just making it would be ok).

                    Worthy of being accepted.
Adequate to satisfy a need, requirement, or standard;satisfactory

                    from dictionary.com

Well fhead, it depends what void in your life ultimate success i.e. a premiership actually fills. For you I suspect its a rather large hole that requires plugging.

For each indivdual "acceptable" is best defined from the above as "Adequate to satisfy a need". That "need" is different for everyone. My "need" is probably more of a social outlet, probably slightly aspirational in that one day I would love to see the flag fly at the SCG, but I don't live and die by it.

Any supporter who answers no to that isn't a supporter.

I will be 'disappointed' in less than top 4 - in 2002 it was the "3 year plan" and a lot of confidence from fans in getting a premiership in 2005, so if I don't see us with a premiership or reasonably close to it I will be 'disappointed'. (A lot of factors can go into an unsuccessful season though)

However, if any fan drops off because of it they can get stuffed. The club has been through a lot worse than not making finals etc

I would have thought that if we are going to make a serious run at the flag, then 2005 would be it.

We have a strong squad with more depth than I can remember in the past 25 years, and a decent smattering of 'game-breakers' to get us home in the tight finishes.

I'm especially impressed by the fact that players like Fixter, Buchanan, Fosdike, LRT, McVeigh, Ablett, and Doyle will only get a senior game when and if we get injuries to our best 22. This means that we ought to be able to sustain good form for much longer sequences, and not have our finals series crippled by players carrying injuries.

This strength also means that we can afford to 'carry' youngsters like McVeigh, Dempster, Malceski, Willoughby and Schmidt - giving them the odd senior hitout without putting too much pressure on.

Unfortunately, it's hard to see players like James, Powell, Sundqvist getting even close to a senior game in 2005.

While this bodes very strongly for the future, I think 2005 might be the last chance for Ball, and possibly Maxfield, Williams and Nicks as well.

That's what makes me think that 2005 could be a bumper year for the Swans.

a top 2 finish would build on the last 2 years and be the step forward the club must take

a flag must come in the next 2 years from this core group of players or the last 2 years have been a waste
Theres not much left to say

I would like to see a flag, but premierships are very hard to win. Therefore, I would set my sights a little lower for now.

In the last two seasons, we have won only one final in each season. Next season, I would like to see the Swans win more than one final. That will get us to the last day in September if we finish top 4 and win our first final.

The last time we won a final three years running was in 1934 to 1936.
