Grundy Kirkby and Wilkes good Targets

With the preseason and rookie drafts on next week I think it is imperative that this time we gain some key position players, we have midfielders and ruckmen but we need to stock up with some 6ft 4 or so type players the three mentioned above have good credentials, thats not to say they will succeed at AFL level but they are certainly worth a look. The thing that worries me is that by the time we get a pick they may already be gone, just a comment on Shaw and Clarke no doubting they have ability but at this stage our priority must be KPP.
    cheers Ian

I hope we get some good Rookies this year. We really need to have as many as we can get to maximise our advantage in the Rookie set up (the Swans and Lions are allowed more than other clubs).
The Lions are looking pretty good with some of their Rookies:

Which of the key players in the Lions' line-up have come from their rookie list?

Copeland is one, plus I think Joel McDonald and either or both of Beau McDonald and Dylan McLaren. (Ryswyck was promoted at the end of last year but I'm not sure whether he's even debuted yet or not. Pratt was promoted during last year and played a few games but has since been released.)

Decent players, but hardly the core of their team. I reckon the Swans' trio of Kirk, Kennelly and Bevan matches them, at the very least.

I agree. I just hope our next Rookie list is filled with as many talented NSW's players as the Lions is filled with Qld ones.
IE that we maximise our leverage over other teams in this dept.

Our rookie list should end up with the 3 best NSW kids,Ed Clarke,Earl Shaw and Troy Bartlett, provided they don't get picked up in the PSD.We can take them with our last 3 picks so we can have a crack early at some talent.Guy Campbell from the Bendigo Bombers is a KPP who is ready to go now.Kirkby,Grundy and Wilkes will all be gone by our pick so we should be looking at Ryan Herring,Will Thursfield and the Gooley twins as development KPPs to take for 2 years.

I am quite happy to take the 3 NSW guys using our concessional picks I suspect you are right about Kirkby,Grundy and Wilkes, Andrew Hayes is still a chance to be rookie listed not sure how Dave Vogels went in his trial with the club guess we will know on Tuesday.

All depends on whether the club takes advantage of fact that the three NSW picks can be in addition to the normal rookie roster. They haven't in the past.

If they ignore this, they may only take one non-NSW rookie in the draft, since Potter has been retained and Nicks (on the veteran list) sits outside the main quota of 38 players. And if they choose to give Thewlis another go, this time on the rookie list, that could mean no "new blood" onto the list from the rookie draft other than the NSW quota.

Also worth bearing in mind that Roos doesn't seem to be a huge fan of gambling on 18yos, judging by his comments quoted in that article pre-draft.

Next Tuesday preseason draft first, no picks for us then the rookie draft at this stage I would be surprised if Thewlis was picked he has talent but we are not really in need of more 186 cm type players, height and marking strength are what we need.

                    glad you have noted this.
I think we may revisit this piont in months and yaers ahead.
So far Roos has shown him self a great motivator of an already eatablished list, he has also demonstrated that he understands the naunces of the game from one end of the spectrum to the other, IE defensive game plans to attacking game plans.
The jury is still out how ever on his development of
young talent and drafting. If he succeeds at the later 2 he could be thae next massiah !

This policy of his, is based upon the book "Moneyball", of which I have read and own a copy. While a good read and very useful for running a baseball team, I can't understand why he thinks what he read in that book can be applied in the AFL. He and a few others in the AFL at other clubs are completely misunderstanding the idea behind the book.

I don't think it's entirely based on that book, though he has quoted it as support for his view. But he has also quoted stats from the AFL on the likelihood of drafting a decent player, even with a top 10 pick.

Liz the book is about using stats to find hidden gems. The reason Roos used those stats is because the book gave him the idea to. Basically the idea of the book is that your better off drafting a player from collage rather than a player from High School because the collage player has been given time to get use to a high level of baseball. Basically the stats the player has in collage, bears a closer resembance to major league stats than High School stats.

How you can use that idea in the AFL is a beyond me.
