I was just reading an article about the days when Powerplay ran the swans and how they sold off players in an attempt to get themselves out of the mess they had created.
It reminded me of Warrick Cappers visit to a nightclub in Wagga late in 1987 the rumours that he was off to the Brisbane Bears were overwhelming, so I decided that we had to raise a petition in an attempt to convince him to stay with the Swans, in a frantic rush we were able to get around 60 signatures.
He was already at the nightclub when my two friends and I arrived petition in hand as we approached this guy in a posh suit asked what we wanted (his manager) when I said we had a petition to present to Warrick he laughed and said unless we had 500 thousand bucks he was off to Brisbane, smart arse I thought Warrick had overheard some of the conversation and came over to us, he was great he was genuinely moved that we had gone to all this trouble for him.
We presented him with the petition and he invited us to sit down and he would buy us a drink and have a chat about things I could not believe it here we were sitting in a nightclub chatting and drinking with Warrick Capper his wife came over and explained that she really wanted to go to Brisbane, I think I knew there and then that he was lost to the Swans, he said he would treasure the petition and that the Swans were close to being successful.
Before leaving he brought some more drinks and I thanked him for his time telling him that it was great that a celebrity was willing to mix with ordinary supporters like us. It was a great night and I left with the impression that Capper was a decent fellow and he deserved everything he could make out of football.
Hope some of you enjoy this little peice of nostalgia and boy could Warrick mark we could do with a FF who could leap like that.
cheers Ian
