I think it should continue to be used to blood the youngsters. If we somehow miraculously win with such an understrength team, then its more good experience for the young guys. If we lose then at least we get to play practice matches without the Wizard Cup trial rules. Its better practicing for the real season with real rules.

i think it depends on where your list is at. port, for example, pretty much had their list sorted out and knew what was going to be their seasons main 22 and strategy. thus, it was an appropriate time for a dress rehearsal in the pre-season.
we've been regrouping to a large extent and have had a number of kids to try out and have done so appropriately in the pre-season.
i think we're getting close to forging a solid team (let's not debate that here, but i think that is the coaching panel's expectation) and injured/recovering players notwithstanding, i think it is time for the serious rehearsal to begin.

put our best 20 available in and whack a few likely kids on the bench for a taste. we get extra interchange players in the pre-season don't we?
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

this is true, but the preseason cup is a good opportunity to develop a winning culture if things are properly set up.

We should rest our best players and play about six young players who are not currently in our best 22.

I believe this is how we found Bevan last year.

Right, but if we get to the semi final or the wisard cup grand final, what should we do then ?

i think you would have to at least give it a crack - but it would depend on your list and how the players at the time are feeling.
And the man who started it, the Schneiderman, can kick his third for the quarter. And the swans are in the Grand Final!

Cliff said we could get flogged in the Wizard Cup and do well during the regular season.

I said we could instead win games in the Wizard Cup and do well in the regular season (a la St Kilda and Geelong).

Last year I didn't care about the Wizard cup until we got flogged. That hurt a bit. I don't really want to see a repeat of that, but also I wouldn't risk certain players (Goodes and Magic spring to mind, but anyone with a chronic injury) on the Wizard cup.

Yep - I would probably leave out Goodes, O'Loughlin, Ball, Maxfield, Williams.

But you give them no credit and would leave them out of your Rd 1 side.

Bet $50 on a Swans premiership.
