Chammond - how can you say schneider is only good enough to get a game when someone is injured?

i have recently watched, again, all the 2003 games and the 2004 game vs essendon when he tore his hamstring and ill tell you that kid has more talent than most in his left hand alone!

if he can show the spectacular form he had in 2003 and stays away from hamstring injuries im sure 2005 will be a big year for him!
And the man who started it, the Schneiderman, can kick his third for the quarter. And the swans are in the Grand Final!

      Thoughts?

actaully it was 2 goals one behind with one assist and one torn hamstring

Ah well, there you go . . . I think he'll have to improve to win a permanent senior spot . . . if he does, that's great . . . so much the better for the Swans!

Talent doesn't always mean everything. Form and fitness mean alot more, talent just adds to the player.

Sure he is talented and should be able to turn matches on his own in time, but he is still young, is coming off a injury riddled season and is slowly gaining fitness after lacking it for most of 2004. At the moment I think he has fallen behind Buchanan in the small forward spot in the team and at best any midfield role would be an impact one and his fitness would need to improve greatly to play their more offen.

I think Chammond is right, unless he has a brake out pre season like he did in 2003, I see it hard for him to get into the side for Round One except for injuries to other players.

if he can show the spectacular form he had in 2003 and stays away from hamstring injuries im sure 2005 will be a big year for him!
Good for you that you have the belief he'll have a big year, I would like to see it happen. But before he makes the senior side he again has to prove himself worthy of a spot in the team and like it or not, his form in 2003 will have very little bearing on the coaching staff's decision. You can't ignore a lack of fitness and a season ruined by injury, in favour of performance from the season before that.

I would put Schneider near the top of the list of "fringe players" - a dozen or so competing for 6 spots in the team IF he is fit. The 2004 team was crying out for someone of his natural and explosive flair. However, the report earlier this week of the interview with Roos on SEN which hinted that Schneider didn't return from the post-season break in the best of shape suggests that he hasn't yet fully committed himself to getting the absolute most out of himself.

That's probably not uncommon in a 20 yo man and he still has time, but until he does he won't be an automatic selection in a team that reckons it is in with a shot for the flag. And contrast that with Bevan, who seems to be in no doubt about how hard he needs to work to be an AFL footballer.

As for Buchanan vs Schneider, I think the only thing they really have in common is their size. They are both "clever" players, in their own ways, but Schneider plays on instinct and self-confidence, whereas Buchanan seems to be more of a thinker. Buchanan is far more likely to provide a clever feed from a pack, but Schneider is far more likely to pick up the ball off his toes, gain 5m on an opponent and kick a goal from 50m.

There is room in the team for both but, as Cliff suggested, they are both competing with a handful of other smallish players for a limited number of spots in the team, and Spriggs, Fosdike, Bevan, Fixter, Crouch - maybe Moore and Willoughby too - all bring other things to the team that neither of these two does.

Buchanan is a far better bet at centre bounces than Schneider. Schneider is far too soft to be relied upon in the crunches.

Until he can show me that he is always prepared to put his body on the line, then to me he is just an opportunist forward.

With still a questionable ability to kick goals when needed - has missed too many easy ones.

yet after thats all said and done - he is still only 20!

i reckon if he wants it bad enough he will get it - he has plenty of time to prove himself!

I agree Sanecow! Maybe in the past he has had "questionable" commitment - but i think he has matured, turned the corner and is really hitting the ground running! Bet ya in 2 months time i will be the one saying "I told you so"

Ask Paul Roos, he clearly had a problem with his fitness when he brought it up in his SEN interview early in the week. Still at least he is showing signs of improvement in that area, hopefully he can keep it up.
