With the knee injury to Maxfield and a new coach, Nicks was only half a season of good footy away from the captaincy in 2002.
He missed that chance, and will never be captain.
At the moment, Kirk deserves to be short-priced favourite. However, I'm starting to like Hall as well; I was watching a dvd called 'Biffs, Bumps and Brawlers' today, and it showed his St Kilda days. It illustrates brilliantly just how far he has come since those days. If he can become a reliable player and a leader, anyone can, and that in himself would make him a good role model for youngsters.
I'm also unwilling to rule out Goodes and Bolton, although I suspect the club would want a higher profile than either Crouch or Schauble could provide. I'll adopt a wait and see attitude. We hate Anthony Rocca

As an example of leadership: Whose house did the Swans congregate at after the shock passing of Wally?
If ever I saw a clear example of off-ground leadership, thats it.
Whilst I think Kirk is an excellent option also, my fear is that his game will go off the boil, and that being less a "talent" player and more an "application" one, this would affect the teams performance. I have more faith in Bazza being a superstar forward until he retires.
Mind you... I would have completely disagreed with myself only a year ago

Has to be Kirky....I disagree with Schneiderman in that I think a new challenge will only invigorate him"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

But Dennis Carroll, Paul Kelly and Stuart Maxfield have all been no more 'talented' than Brett Kirk. They are/were all 'application' players.Originally posted by Schneiderman

yep. i think it is a different sort of inspiration provided by your courageous hard at it players, than your ultra skilled superstars.
I feel that a superstar would be more likely to be put off their game by the added responsibility of captaincy, than a "workmanlike" player who has the respect of the whole team.
What about the saints style rotating captain policy??I wish my weed was EMO so it would cut itselfComment

Hey LS you should have titled your post the "open season on Jude" post.Originally posted by LittleSchneider
If Maxfield was to retire at the end of this season - which many are predicting - who would you think would be captain and why?
As soon as you mention the word future captain, out they all come, knives at the ready.Comment

I presume you're talking primarily about Kelly. Like Kirk, he had good skills coupled with a heart the size of Phar Lap; that's what made him a superstar. I don't think that in a team with the likes of Mark Bayes and Michael O'Loughlin, you could make a case for Kelly being the most naturally talented player.Originally posted by Doctor J.

Dennis Carroll was more skilled than Kirk.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Yep - I think he'd be a very good choice.Originally posted by stellation
I'd like it to be Andrew Schauble, but that ain't gonna happen and he wasn't an option in the poll.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.
