Good Read. Methink Grundy will be groomed more for a KP forward role than a KP back role.

Thanks for that. It was very well written and easy to read.

If Swans officials could have planned it, then the result of our selections would have been pretty similar. Looks like a good mix, and if any of these talls match potential, I think we will have overcome our tall defensive problems.

The rookies sound handy but how many rookies end up on the senior list and make a decent contribution?Bevan is obviously one but how many have kicked on?I'd be interested to know what the ratio is.

You're right, but I'm not sure that past outcomes are valid predictors here, because clubs have only really started taking the rookie list seriously in the past few years. In Sydney's case, for example, the rookie list was pretty much an after-thought during the Eade years, and any success we had with the rookies had a large slice of blind luck involved.

But in the past two or three seasons, the Swans (and a number of other clubs, of course) have had a clear strategy for recruitment of rookies, and Sydney have certainly made a bigger effort to get the most out of their priority picks. As a result I think we are seeing the rookie list become accepted as a genuine conduit to AFL football.

I know it's only crystal-ball stuff, but I think this year's bunch of rookies might turn out to be a bonanza for the Swans.

Freo and Melbourne are two clubs who have had particular success with the rookie list. Adelaide also have quite a few ex-rookies on their current senior list, though I'm not sure that these are as "high quality" as some of those unearthed by Freo and the Dees.

Some names of quality players who have graduated from rookie lists (and others will be able to add to it) include:

Rioli, Mark Johnson, Davey, Sandilands, Chad Fletcher, Robbie Haddrill, David Teague, Bret Thornton, Dean Brogan.

There is a decent list of 3rd and 4th tier AFL players that could also be added.

And on our own list, Kirk, Bevan, Jolly and Kennelly have all come via that route (though Kennelly is obviously a special case).

It is another way of recruiting and adding depth. Most won't make it, but then a significant portion of those taken in the main draft won't make it either.

Giving a second chance to those who missed out as teenagers seems to be a particularly valuable use of the list. If there is one more Brett Kirk out there, its got to be worth taking the punt.

I think this list is a pretty good indicator of which teams are conservative and which progressive when it comes to developing new talent.
The Swans are pretty low down on the list when you take out Jolly and James (who should not really be there).

the low exposure to local players of quality may be a factor with the swans.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

More and more AFL clubs are taking the rookie draft a lot more seriously now including the Swans. In the previous years some of the NSW choices for instance have been very hopeful that they were going to come up,eg.Luke Taylor,Luke Jarjoura,Tom Hill,Peter McGrath and Scott Muller, and none of them did. From looking at Sydney's current rookies I would expect 80% of them will play AFL footy and possibly 50% playing 50 plus games. They probably had a lot of sleepless nights hoping that Clarke and Shaw would get through to the rookie draft but they did.Hayes must have shown potential with the Reserves to be taken ahead of Troy Bartlett.Campbell could be very handy due to his versatility,Vogels might be the smoky of both drafts.Garrubba could be anything as having seen him a few times his good is very good and his bad you don't want to know about, confidence could be his key.Grundy is the old fashioned footballer,he's never going to win a Stawell Gift but he can take a mark, play at both ends and works very hard.We now have Josh Willoughby,Tim Schmidt,Matthew Davis and Heath Grundy all South Australian's and all 19 this year, they shouldn't get homesick. All Swans supporters keep following the ACTAFL results to follow these guys as they are our future.

Hmmm...the Swans are level with or ahead of Brisbane, Port and Collingwood on this front, the three teams that have collectively played the last three grand finals.

Don't agree, most of the players on other clubs lists are marginal or nowhere.

Noticably the WA clubs seem to have the pick of local over-looked players

Another way to look at it is that clubs have volume of rookie list, as a result of poor recruiting in the main draft.

You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler
