    Mark Powell

There are some photos up on the Swans website from the community camp in Wollongong the week before last.

There's one, about 3 from the end, that shows a pretty clear picture of Powell in the background, displaying an impressively beefed up physique. He actually looks like a key position player now. I didn't see him, other than from a distance on Friday night, but this photo certainly suggests he may now have the body to go with his ability.

Where do you see him playing? I'd say midfield, but wouldn't have a clue.

I was on his parent's flight and bus via Albury for the Pies game in 2003. Mrs Powell told me how when he was in Narrandera he didn't really have to try "because he was a lot better than the rest of them". Then his family moved to Albury, where the league was a lot stronger. Mrs Powell said that he really had to "pull his finger out there" as "he couldn't get away with loafing around".

Maybe last season was a shock to his system. He DOES have ability.

However there was one particular occasion on Friday night where I recall he (according to my naked eye) baulked from going for a mark in a pack. Things like this are a concern.

I do hope he makes it. He is only a young boy in a big city for the first time. But I am worried about what could be perceived as a rather laconic attitude. I hope that has been stamped out of him.

He badly needed to beef up. I'm glad he appears to have done that.

        Defence.

Or maybe short spells up forward in the type of role Saddo played last year. He played forward more than back in the reserves games last year - those I saw, anyhow.

I just reckon our forward line doesn't need tinkering with much but we still need to find a couple of tall, competent defenders from LRT, Powell, James, Campbell, Vogels and Grundy.

Not always - how many Swans were already going up and where did the ball finish up. Just because he is a biggish fella doesn't mean he can't crumb. I saw him a bit in the reserves last year and his courage is one thing I would not question. I too hope he has a good year and can force his way into the best 22, he certainy seems to have a bit of ability.

Yeah - I've not seen anything, either at reserves or senior level, to suggest that courage is even the slightest issue.

              MOL is working hard there.

I am hoping to see him on the ground a lot more this year, kicking splendid goals.

PS. Cool Pics, JS. It must be a good cam. We expect to see a lot more photos this year of flag waving.

I agree. I thought he had a very solid game on Friday and was quite impressed with some of his skills. I think he could be good in defense - could you see him upfront in anyway liz?
And the man who started it, the Schneiderman, can kick his third for the quarter. And the swans are in the Grand Final!

i second the call for Powell to play defence, and doubt very much that courage is an issue. One of the things about him that caught my eye a few years back was the fact that he seemed fearless. I also remember one game that he played in the seniors in the Back pocket IIRC and he took a mark from behind, when it would have been quite acceptable to go for the spoil. I liked the fact that he had backed himself to take the mark.

Do i also remember him looking not bad at all in front of goal for the 2's?

I'd like to see him play at CHB or HBF, with the potential to go forward, a la Leppa. Could also free up Kennelly to go to the wing.

There are a few candidates for a HBF role if freeing up Kennelly is an objective.

Maybe none has his pace but they are athletic enough.

Dempster is one who could play there this year in patches. Matt Davis is a slightly longer term option. Even Craig Bolton, particularly if someone else steps up as more of a KP defender.

Of the shorter players, both Bevan and Fixter (if he ever gets fit) have the foot speed to be damaging there, as well as the defensive nous to take care of an opponent at the same time.

Williams HBF...I'd also like to see Schneider trialled there during the Wizz.
