    Maxfield.

When working out my best 22 i found it hard to put maxfield in, in fact without the captaincy im starting to think at this stage its almost unfair to squeeze someone out for him, any thoughts?

I agree, I just can't find him a place in the side. However we all know if fit he'll play Round One and will only miss games if his injuried or retires midseason (which seems unlikely)
    Once was, now elsewhere

Its even harder as he doesnt like being used off the bench as an impact player, and its not good for a captain anyway. I hope he makes me eat humble pie though with a stellar season, he deserves to go out on a high.

Is it good for a team to be obligated to "squeeze" their Captain in ?
Surley you want your Captain to definatly be in your best 18 players at the club ?

well thats why i have already said he should of retired and we wouldnt have this problem.

However from a personal selfish view i hope maxfield goes great cos he is on of my favourite players.

I believe people underestimate the role that Maxfield plays in the team. It is he who controls the tempo out there, the one who determines when the team switches up a gear. And while he may only be capable of playing in patches nowadays, some of those patches can be very damaging.

His first quarter in the late season Melbourne game was fantastic. He was pretty much the reason why the team rallied in an otherwise poor effort against the Eagles at Subi and came within striking distance. And he was the stand-out in the flogging by Port.

He is also the closest that the Swans have to a midfield "enforcer". With a midget brigade operating through there, it is pretty important to have someone to dish out the bumps and aggression - in a fair way, of course. Bolton is aggressive at the ball but not really a true midfield enforcer.

              .

yeh but thats how many minutes out of the total season.

Last year he didnt get enough of the ball or do enough with it when he had it.

I agree however his on field leadership is great, but perhaps it could be found elsewhere?

No other player in the team has put his hand up and demanded the captaincy yet. There are patches of leadership around the ground, but Maxfield still provides by far the most.

but at the moment its his job, i wouldnt of said he was doing it before he was made captain (other than in patches).

Perhaps players dont want to step on the captains toes and do his job!..

again though hope stuey goes out with a bang and a premiership, hes been great for the swans.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this. I reckon he was, even before he was given the captaincy. He was probably leading the B&F in mid 2002 at the time he injured his knee and sat out the rest of the season.

but as a player and on current from do you think he deserves his spot in the best 22?

(and am just asking not trying to argue with you non stop )

Unquestionably yes, based on last year's form.

He is tried and tested and only one game from everyone salivating over him.

He has given the team some of its most treasured moments ever.

                          Such as:
*Setting up Dale Lewis for the goal which got us going against Essendon in 96 Prelim
*Match winning goal against Kangaroos in 99 in THAT game.
*80 metre goal against Port in 2003 QF

Obviously he is a talented footballer - the issue is whether or not he can reproduce it.

I don't agree, I think that Barry Hall has already done more than enough (displayed skill, courage, committment, self control, inspiration, improvment both individual and general of his playing group -forwards- as well as been a true enforcer ! All this over several seasons!) I also think Barry Hall provides more leadership than Stewie.
It might be that they would prefer a younger player or a player not in the forward line to step up, but I don't think you can say that Bazza has not put his hand well and truely up in the air as a deserving captain.
If stewie can not cut it in our best 18, he should hand the captaincy over immediatly. If there is not a sense of merit handed out at the top, what sense of justice will there be for the young kids hoping to be chosen for inclusion in the team based on their talent and form ?

I agree that Hall provides good leadership out there in the forward line. I still fear that he is one bad afternoon with the umpires away from getting several weeks suspension though.

In terms of Maxfield and what he offers the team, I would pick him at the moment ahead of all but two midfielders on the list because of the package of attributes he brings to the team.

If a few haven't elevated themselves clearly above him by seasons end, then we will probably have gone backwards.
