Kirk. Is the leader of the midfield. Hall is the leader of the forward line. I know that you are a particular Maxi fan but still.....

Originally posted by liz I believe people underestimate the role that Maxfield plays in the team. It is he who controls the tempo out there, the one who determines when the team switches up a gear. And while he may only be capable of playing in patches nowadays, some of those patches can be very damaging.
His first quarter in the late season Melbourne game was fantastic. He was pretty much the reason why the team rallied in an otherwise poor effort against the Eagles at Subi and came within striking distance. And he was the stand-out in the flogging by Port.
He is also the closest that the Swans have to a midfield "enforcer". With a midget brigade operating through there, it is pretty important to have someone to dish out the bumps and aggression - in a fair way, of course. Bolton is aggressive at the ball but not really a true midfield enforcer.
I think his best moment was leading the win against Carlton. Took the game apart for about 10 minutes and it was enough.
All of which goes to show that he very rarely produces what he is actually capable of. Hence I rate others ahead of him.

Maxfield wastes very few posessions and is one of the few midfielders who can consistently deliver a long penetrating kick into the 50. Perhaps his disposal is not as damaging as in years past, but considering the only other midfielder who has a booming delivery takes about 15 minutes to make a decision, i would say maxfield deserves his spot.
Note: I am hopping that Jazzy Mc veigh will start to get enough game time to become another long kick out of the midfield option....

How many of our other midfielder can we even recall one game - or at least, significant portion of a game - where they grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and either shone, turned the tide on behalf of the team, or at least gave their all in trying to stop the dam walls bursting?
Williams yes - not often last year but sufficient in previous years and definitely did it in the QF.
Kirk yes - the final quarter against Carlton and the whole Adelaide games are ones that I can instantly recall.
Jude not really in 2004, though he did in 2003 a few times. He also tried to match it with Maxfield against Port but let himself down with worse than usual disposal.
The ability of a midfielder to grab a game by the scruff of its neck is not the only attribute but is an important one, and it is the lack of these game breakers that holds our midfield back.
I'm a bit baffled that others would want to drop one of the few we have who even tries to do it.
Enough with the maxfield complaints, this man will pinpoint a target better than any other in the club, and has the strength to lead. Sure it will probably be his last year, but he has done the job well enough and improved the work rate of guys like ROK to make him close to one of the best HFF players in the game.
