Originally posted by DST The clubs have no say where these practice games are played. It is the AFL that sets the venues which is done to make sure that all practice games venues are of an equal standard re surface and changing facilities etc.
As for promotion in the country with games & clinics etc, that has already been done with the community camps that were held a couple of weeks ago.
These games have nothing to do with the fans (and rightly so), they are about preparing the team in the best possible way in the best possible facilities for the year ahead.

Shouldn't the AFL be more worried about spreading the game rather than just a token "community camp", I find it rather hard to believe that there are no suitable Australian Rules football facilities rather than the handful listed.
As for games having nothing to do with the fans, well to me that where the AFL is losing sight of the big picture, prehaps that is just my league up bringing. It seems unless you live within a area with that has a facility the AFL deems suitable, you can forget about seeing a live AFL game.
With the NRL games have been played in Parkes,Bathurst,Mackay,Ulladulla,Bega,Albion Park,Lismore etc

If the are not taking football to the people, how come we have the following games this week at:
Aurora - Launceston
Marrara - Darwin
Joondalup - WA
Port Lincoln - SA
Morwell - VIC
Add that to Cairns last week and with games in Alice Springs, Laverton & Newcastle to come as well, I think the AFL do very well taking the football to the people.
Every team will get to play at home in the practice games (keeps the travel costs down). That is why we have a game at Telstra Stadium this week, but we will be hitting the road for Laverton next week and somewhere else the week after.

Geez, some of the Eastern Suburbs chardonnay Swans supporters think Telstra Stadium is hitting the road.

Can only be good for the Swans they would only have limited access to the stadium so why not use it to practice for future games and not many of the kids would of had the chance to play many games on it.

fair enough wasn't aware of the other practice games in regional areas.
If they are worried about keeping travelling costs down they would be better off going to Newcastle IMHO (or even Henson park if it up to standard), it is going to look rather pathetic with at best a few thousand in TS, not to mention a rather expensive excerise for the Swans ie ground hire.etc

From what I have heard we are slated to play our last practice game in Newcastle after Laverton.
Just for the record we (the Swans) don't pay for the ground hire during the practice games the AFL does.
In the end these games are practice games and their will be no TV coverage so the AFL don't care how many people turn up. Been out to Waverly many a time to watch the Swans play in a practice game in front of maybe 300 people.

Planet Albury. It is on the northern outskirts of the town. It is a pretty nice ground. If it were in the NRL it wouldn't be the worst ground used.
Has a big leagues club right next to the ground too. Used to get all the old biddies up from Victoria for the day on the pokies.
I watched the Swans play Richmond there in 92 I think.

Makes you wonder why the AFL would pay out money for something they get little or no return on, doesnt seem like good business sense, but it must work for them
Just from the viewpoint of a casual observer, if they see a crowd in the low thousands in somewhere like TS I wouldn't imagine they would be encouraged to see a game

As far as I can work out, the game is at Telstra Stadium because it was a last minute decision.
The loser of the Swans v Bulldogs game was originally scheduled to play at Morwell in Gippsland this Saturday. However, when it came down to it, the AFL chose to put the Richmond v Essendon game in Morwell rather than Sydney v Brisbane, and re-schedule the Swans game to a location more convenient to those two teams.
I can understand the AFL's thinking, but it surely pissed me off.

I don't know how many times I have to tell people that it is NOT fashionable to drink chardonnay anymore. This year its sauvignon blanc and pinot gris.

I don't eat animals since discovering this ability. I used to. But one day the lamb I was eating came through to me and ever since then I haven't been able to eat meat.
Well chammond now you know how I feel about not getting to see the boys at York Park. Talk about an emotional rollercoaster on Saturday. In the last quarter I nearly dared to hope.
