    Running, running players

How fit does a footballer have to be these days?

My sources tell me that the GPS devices worn by some players last weekend produced some interesting results.

Perhaps not surprisingly Jude Bolton covered 22 klms.

Real surprise was that LRT was tracked at 20 klms!

Underlines why fitness is everything and underdone players can be a liability.

I wonder how many METRES Plugger would have clocked up if he'd been set up with one of those devices at a random point in his career

Let's see... 5 or 6 30 metre leads in a quarter... 100 metres jog to the 1/4 time huddle....

Don't get many of those sorts of players any more...

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

The Swans have consistently cited LRT as one of the elite athletes at the club. And when you look at CHFs like Riewoldt you can understand why clubs are looking to athletes like LRT to take the CHB role. And as good an overhead mark as Riewoldt is, he actually takes very few contested marks. He wins by just running his opponents ragged.

i watched him last year at york park (riedwoldt) he never stops moving, just keeps running even when the ball is in the other teams 50 he is trying to run off his man and make him tired.

Hope he feels like moving to sydney soon.

Riewoldt is beauty, can take a contested mark as well when needed but you analysis is spot on. Get's most of his marks on the chest on his own due to his amazing running capacity.

Like the look of LRT as present, if he can continue this improvement and form through the season that will one massive bit of the missing jigzaw puzzle from last year that was missing.

Now just need a McVeigh, Willoughby or Moore to have a year out of the box and we are on our way.

This was the John Kennedy theory at Hawthorn in the early 60's.
A guy called Percy Cerrutty who coached Olympic athelets had the Hawks running up sand dunes during pre-season which was unheard of in those days. Pre-season that is. They were so fit they ran the opposition ragged and into the ground. The only one who kept up with them was Skilton.

I recall the theory at training when doing circle work. You went around and around and around the ground sprinting, kicking and handballing and you were not allowed to stop or walk, otherwise 20 push ups. Boy was I buggered after training, but fit.

If you recall Greg William,s running ability, you would have noticed that he would just run taggers into the ground as he kept on the move. Riewolt is obviously very fit and a smart footballer.

If LRT can do well at CHB how more balanced as a team will we be. More options around the ground open up and Goodes as a free agent once again is exciting.

Yep, we'd slot Goodes in to the Unlicensed Dog position

Types of fitness is an interesting topic.Brisbane players body shape is very much on the muscular side. They are strong in contests and hard to knock off the ball.
St Kilda, probably because they are younger, have more slight, running physiques although some are beginning to bulk up eg Goddard.
I think it was Malthouse with the WC who really made a point of getting his players stronger. These things always run in cycles.Clubs always copy what the better teams are doing.
