Notes: Daniel Bradshaw and Michael Voss scored early goals for the Lions, while Sydney's Heath James failed to see out the opening term, coming off with what appeared to be a thigh or groin strain. Barry Hall, Nick Potter and rookie Luke Vogels scored goals as the Swans outscored Brisbane in the second term. Lewis Roberts-Thomson was prominent for Sydney during that period. Anthony Corrie and Tom Logan were the Lions' goal-scorers.
Sydney done by 50+ points. Potter and Willoughby went OK (source Steven Brassel 3AW)
You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler

Poor guy, he always seems to cop injuries. Hope it's just a precaution, he can't afford for ANYTHING not to go his way this year.
Sounds like Roos is still involving the rookies quite heavily. I daresay over the next 2 weeks he will start to field more of a "serious" line-up ahead of the h&a season.
177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out.... Des' Weblog

Sydney Swans v Brisbane Lions at Telstra Stadium 2.00pm AEDT
SYDNEY - 0.2, 3.6, 3.7
BRISBANE - 3.1, 5.8, 7.15

Anthony Corrie and Tom Logan were the Lions' goalscorers. The third term was all Brisbane, though innacuracy cost them - scoring 2.7 while holding Sydney to just one behind for the term. Luke Power and Richard Hadley were busy for the Lions while Barry Hall was Sydney's best in the third quarter.
Just heard on radio Brisbane won by 55 [points.

Pretty lacklustre game overall. If Brisbane had kicked more from their set shots the margin could have been 70+. I think the game is best summed up by the fact the loudest cheer of the day was for when Hall and Brad Scott had a little stoush during the 2nd half. Senior players came in to the side including Hall, Maxfield, Williams and Ball but other seniors who had played in recent weeks were missing including Jude, Kirk, Nicks and O'Keefe
Overall, it was sloppy, sloppy game by us, some terrible skill errors, handballs falling short, kicks not hitting targets, handballing to teammates in pressure situations. The umpires didn't help the situation either, I think the first 7 or 8 frees went the Lions way including a couple shots on goal. But they weren't the reason we lost the game, we just win the hard ball. I think we missed Kirk, Bolton and Crouch in the middle. Spriggs didn't impress me and I thought Fosdike was just horrendous.
Willoughby played quite a bit in defence on Luke Power and did alright. He also took some of the kickins, which I found interesting. Potter came off the bench and did some nice things like getting the ball out of the packs. LRT was commanding at CHB, took some strong marks, but was let down by his indecision after taking those marks. I thought Dempster did pretty well playing on Aker.
Heath James did come off looking proppy before the end of the first quarter but I do recall him playing later on. I was worried when Hall came off after sliding in to attempt to take a mark (and left a nice big divot too), and went off clutching his eye but did come back later on.
Interesting that McVeigh didn't play, has he already done enough to earn a Round 1 spot?
Schneider suited up and ran out but I don't think he played for whatever reason.
LRT continues to be very good at CHB. Bit unfair to question his decision making, there wasn't much happening in front of him to go to.
Spriggs was okay, I wouldn't describe him as dissapointing. Agree Fosdike wasn't great- Spriggs is ahead of him in my mind atm.
Willo seemed to be kicking straigt this year, which is a good start.
Overall we very much looked to be more interested in getting positional play/set plays correct than actually winning the game. Hall spent more time bossing around the other players in the forward line than actually worrying about his own game.
Worst part was Brisbane deciding to do a 25 minute warm down on the field instead of in the training room that delayed the kids being allowed on the oval for kick to kick. Very poor form.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
Hard to find much positive to say about that effort. The Swans' effort lacked focus and intensity.
A few players did some good things at times but you'd be hard pressed to find a player who had a good overall game.
Vogels was again one of the better players. I'm impressed by his composure and ability to position his body well to take contested marks but he hasn't yet got the hang of clamping onto the ball to bring it down.
Grundy, Jolly and Doyle were others who should have taken contested marks but failed to hold them. There's a few who need to attend a B Hall contested marking clinic this week - though they should concentrate on his 2004 resume, not his efforts today.
Ball was the most impressive marker out there today but his kicking was pretty ordinary. LRT also took a couple of good ones.
Willoughby got a fair bit of the pill and has a nice long kick on him. Decision making was a bit questionable at times - kicking to 2 on 1 contests (the Lions' way) but that might be attributable to a lack of movement further up the ground.
Potter was another who's energy and hustle was impressive and he fully deserved his goal. Didn't seem to get much game time though. Clarke also looked good in his small cameo role.
Buchanan was possibly the pick of the bunch. He looks slow chasing but was busy and probably showed the most consistent skill level. Produced a couple of beautiful kicks forward.
Kennelly looked good when he had the ball but had a fair few goals kicked on him. Generally looked pretty disinterested.
Maxfield was busy without starring. B2 was solid but not spectacular. Willo Snr didn't get into the game.
Dempster was another who struggled to make much of an impact. Powell got a bit of the ball early but wasted it and then didn't really get involved.
Spriggs was better than Fosdike, but that's not saying much. Neither was particularly good.
Moore struggled to get into it. Schmidt got his first run of the season. Touched it a few times in the 3rd quarter and was OK without doing anything of particular note.
McVeigh and Schneider joined B1, Kirk and O'Keefe as players who were 'rested'.
i'll say it now and I'll say it again, the pre-season doesn't mean anything
Roos will hopefully start to field a stronger team for the final two hitouts before the regular season, I would'nt worry about todays result, there were some shocking decisions made by the umpires (again). let's wait and see when the team is at full strength.
