$20m raid into NRL heartland
Pretty non-committal story but has anyone from the AFL ever so openly canvassed a 2nd team in Sydney???
"At the moment, we are struggling getting the game into schools," Demetriou said. "We want to shore up our investment in teenagers in an effort to attract the best athletes to our game.
"We are also planning on working with local governments in looking at new facilities."
Long overdue, the majority of $$ to date has gone to <12 yolds, and the decline for the higher age groups has been plain to see. At this level Greater Western Sydney has been a disaster (just ask Collingwood about that!!!). Better relationships with local councils are a must given the priority that local AFL clubs get at the moment.
From what I've seen we are starting to see some better people come into AFLNSW at the ground level (though here's still plenty of dead wood running around though).
It's gotta be a long term comittment though, three years worth of TV money is not going to be enough.
