3 Ruckmen Senario

Im a relative 'newbie' to AFL and havent really seen much of this style of play recently (either that or havent been paying enough attention to ruckmen) BUT....

Would playing 3 ruckmen, as suggested by Roos:

(a) create a more defensive style of play
(b) Create a less 'skillful' team (after all I dont think having a ruckman in replace of MOL is filling a 'skill' gap!)
(c) All of the Above
(d) None of the above - LS your lost...

its the fear of the ball hitting the ground, makes the team too slow...

Can open up a number of options.

Big man at FF - eg. Doyle rather than Ball because we don't want to lose the first game of the season because of failed Jason Ball kick.

Any of the 3 could be a loose man in defence, which means not having to drop a midfielder back perhaps.

Rotate them off the bench at FF.

Loose big man lurking on the wing to feed off to running players.

Coaches are innovative so nothing would surprise.

There are certainly benefits to playing three big men at any time IMO, especially if each one has other skills (apart from rucking) and have different rucking styles. It provides for more options in defence, attack and against different rucking opponents. Plus depending on the type of midfield you play against, you may want to ruck differently.

Leigh Mathews will play three ruckman at any chance he gets.

The Swans play a completely different style of football though. Their's is based on bashing the ball forward, strong bodies at the contest and lots of aerial contests; ours on run, run, run, keep the ball in possession and being good at ground level. If we tried to play the Lions on their terms we'd be smashed every time.

Three true ruckmen is too many for me, but if O'Loughlin is out and one of them (Doyle) is essentially playing as a replacement forward target, it might work.

Brisbane have had the luxury of playing their own game for a few years.

Rodney Eade was the coach who would run his players round in circles to create a mismatch small / tall. Of course that cuts both ways, a well weighted pass to a tall on a small is fine, but ball hits the ground and the small gets away, may set something up.

I would have thought Roosey was really saying he 'would' play three talls in the right circumstances, matchups will dictate in the end (and of course form).

Maybe for the swans to take the next step we have to adjust our game plan and having a big target in the square may allow us to move the ball a bit quicker without having to chip it around waiting for Mol or Baz to lead.
