    Swans' embarrassment of riches

    Swans' embarrassment of riches

"With Mick O'Loughlin not playing now Davo will slot into forward pocket and full forward.

"We would've liked Goodesy to get another full game but with his running preparation he should be fine."

With new recruits David Spriggs and Darren Jolly showing promise, Roos has 27 players with at least eight senior game vying for 22 spots.

That number goes up to 31 if you factor in Sean Dempster, last year's No.1 draft pick Jarred Moore, Tim Schmidt and Josh Willoughby - all still to make senior debuts.

And Roos still has O'Loughlin, Saddington and fullback Andrew Schauble to come back.
So MO'L is out of Rnd one, and picking the Rnd one team is a tough choice. I hope we have this problem in Sept as well.

By my count we have 32 players with seniors experience, and another couple who are certain to debut.

    It's all good.

...until you look at the lists of Port, St. Kilda and Brisbane.

I think we have our best list in years, we just need to develop our backline more and we arent far off. Of course id like to get a star midfielder, maybe we will soon
Theres not much left to say

I beg to differ.I think our major problem is we don't kick enough goals. Our backline, which always looks a few tall players short, does pretty well. Our goal kicking accuracy keeps us in many games but we need more shots at goal which means we need the ball inside our fifty more often.
Obviously a star midfielder would help with that.

We have the makings of a good midfield.

Schneider, Bevan, Buchanan and Fixter all have the potential to become very good, inside midfielders.

Similarly, McVeigh and Kennelly can develop into classy, outside midfielders.

The problem is, that as of Round 1 2005, none of these players has the experience to play in these roles, (except maybe Kennelly).

Let's just hope they come along quickly.

You can't treat the three sections of the team in isolation though.

The defensive style of the midfield can be partly attributed to the fact that we are a bit short down back. The combined efforts of a gallant yet undersized defence and a hardworking, accountable midfield have resulted in a very good defensive record but must be partly responsible for the fact that the supply to the forward line isn't great.
