I agree. A player has to be included if they can hold an in-form opposition forward kickless in a final when played in defence (Matera), and can kick goals when played forward. Having options like that can turn a match.

What was it, he kicked four goals in one quarter in a practice match? I know that practice matches are about as relevant as tiddlywinks, but it still has to make the match committee pay attention.

I've always liked watching him play, even back to his days with the Boroughs. He's obviously knocking on the door of the best 22, and given the impact of injuries he'll probably get a regular run in the firsts.

But I don't think he's nailed down his spot yet . . . he does some nice things, yet lacks consistency. In the forward line he doesn't kick enough goals, and on-the-ball he doesn't get to enough contests.

Still, I hope he grabs his chances early, and proves me wrong.

Six weeks ago I'd have agreed with you but I reckon he's been the stand-out player over the pre-season, certainly amongst the younger brigade. On that basis I'd say he is currently in the best 22 (ie on form) but could easily be overtaken if he can't sustain it.

That wasn't an official club list, just the club providing the TFS with a list of 28 names and the producers fitting them into a side as best they can.

As it turned out Roos had Nicks as a starter and Fosdike will be playing with the dew-kickers this week.

Yeah, but pre-season form is no form, once the real stuff starts. In two separate newspapers I read comments about how Spriggs and Dempster had had exceptional pre-seasons, yet they're out, and Bevan, who was supposed to have had a very average pre-season, is in. And Crouch, Mathews, Goodes etc had virtually no real pre-season, yet they're in . . . and I bet M O'L gets in without even kicking a ball in anger.

I guess when it came down to it, Buchanan's four goal effort caught everyone's eye and he deserves to get first shot at cementing a spot.

For me it was more his efforts in an otherwise insipid performance against the Lions that stood out.

He was also listed in the best in the Adelaide and Collingwood games.

I think Buchanan's form from last season counts for something too. I just finished watching the Hawks game from last season and he was very good in that game with his chasing and tackling and not to mention his brilliant pickup and handball to Jude for the winning goal.

I can't argue that he does some very nice work . . but so far he hasn't done it often enough . . . and that flash of brilliance was a prime example: if Kirk or Williams had've done that, we wouldn't even have blinked, because they show exceptional skill all the time. Kelly for example, would snatch the ball out of a contest 3 or 4 times a quarter, and we'd be blase about it.

Of course, the other side of the coin is that Buchanan probably doesn't get enough game time for us to really tell if he can be a consistent, four-quarter contributor. Maybe this week will be the chance he's been looking for.
