    Baz and the umpires

Doesn't say much but the following comment is interesting (not just in relation to Hall)

"If someone has infringed high, and there's no noticeable reaction from Barry, we're not sure it was a free kick and so it might not be paid."

This seems to suggest that players acting up after incidental contact can win them unwarranted frees, and that the umpires do "guess" what happened at times, rather than just rely on what they actually saw.

Well, its simple, he just needs to trip himself up all the time and he'll be guaranteed a kick or to for free.

Interestingly it did actually improve in overall free kicks last year (which suprises me 'cause I don't recall it being much better!).

        Frf/Fra

        Barry Hall
        2003 24 games: 9/32
        2004 24 games: 20/34

        Matthew Lloyd
        2003 24 games: 18/18
        2004 24 games: 29/24

        Warren Tredrea
        2003 23 games: 23/18
        2004 25 games: 29/15

        Fraser Gehrig
        2003 21 games: 17/23
        2004 23 games: 15/25
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

But even then the maggots will probably not blow their whistle cause they'll think he's acting. No win situation really.

IIRC Roos went to Geischen at the start of 2004 with these stats in hand. Another interesting one was Neitz - Daniher complained about his treatment after a particularly shoddy week of umpiring against him and the following week his frees f/a were reversed!

I don't think raw numbers are any kind of measure of whether anyone is getting a fair deal.

                The only real measures are:

                - number of blatantly wrong decisions that go against a team / player
                - proportion of soft / dubious ones that go for or against a team / player with regard to consistent application of rules across games and within games.

Unfortunately no such definitive stats are made public, if indeed they are even collated.

And we all know that our team is the most hard done by - regardless of availability of stats to back it up.

It might have a bit to do with his background. In boxing, you never want to indicate you've been hit -- gives easy points to your opponent.

Being hit is one thing, but being scragged is not on.

                        That's just stupid.

I also think that whether the umpires have a good relationship with Baz or not, that shouldn't change their minds on decisions. Eg if Baz was meant to be paid a free kick when instead the opposing team got rewarded it instead. I've seen that happen plenty of times.

I dont think Baz or for that matter MoL do there chances any good with the umps by constantly begging for frees, I wish they would just get on with it at times instead of having a moan to the Ump while the opposition runs away with the ball.

                          Cheers

Tredrea is interesting. He is just as big as Barry but they don't seem to have much trouble finding the around the necks to him.

                              Doh.

Treders must be married to the combovers daughter.
