Sydney AFL Club in the Cross

An update ... all Swans members now get free membership to this. It's just next to the Bourbon and Beefsteak and the Fountain in the Cross.

I've gotta say, I was a bit sceptical about it all, but we decided to make the effort to support the Club and head out there today after the game. We were on the first bus from the SCG. It took about 10 - 15 minutes to get there. No hassles.

The Club is fairly narrow, meaning that there are multi-levels. At the top, there was an area set up for the after match, but you could stop off at several bars/pokies areas along the way. We easily found a table for our group. I expected something pretty daggy, but whilst not being the flashest place that I've been to, it was quite respectable. It was clean, well lit and there were plenty of tables (when we arrived, this changed during the evening).

On the top level, the match was being replayed on a big screen, with commentary. There was a low murmur of conversation, but it was easy to hear the commentary. Everyone was pleasant and cheerful.

Drinks were easy to get (quite a few bars) and your membership gives a discount ... drinks were much cheaper than at the SCG. I don't normally notice these things, so they were cheap! e.g. a glass of red and a bourbon for $7.10, instead of $12+ at the SCG. On top of this, there were platters of food coming around .... calamari, skewers, fish cocktails, samosas, and more .... hot and good.

Nicksy and Magic arrived and chatted up on the stage. After quite a while Bazza came up. It was very relaxed and informal, with questions from the floor. Afterwards the players spent a lot of time chatting with people and signing autographs before heading off. We weren't part of that, but as they left, they wandered to the various groups and waved and said thanks for coming. It seemed that they were making quite an effort, over a standard after match at the MA Noble.

We hung around for another drink and left. I noticed that the rest of the club was pretty full with other people. I suspect that this will be a good earner for the Swans, and if we can make it a regular venue, it will be great.

You can also walk there from the SCG, takes about 20 minuets straight down Victoria street past Sint Vinnies and into the cross and you're there! 30 minuets tops.

Thanks for this info Bron. Our gang were contemplating doing the same things as you after the MA Noble After-match had finished. But as Benny-W had to drop off the Hombres y Mujeres mexicanos al'aereopuerto we opted for a night under the stars at the Fox & Lion before tucking into some pizza at Zino's on Crown St.

The thing is, we'd have had to have either all caught cabs or walked from the SCG. Or had to re-park both Benny's and Norris's cars somewhere in the X. (The parking station there is both feral and expensive.)

Not sure the solution to things, as I do want to be pro-active in supporting MY club's licensed premises. I was there for the Wizard Cup and found the place a tad depressing. No food there, nothing around at all. BUT I think with some good marketing we could nearly get the crowds we used to get at Easts Leagues to watch away matches upstairs in the big auditorium.

Chatted with guys from the Hawthorn and Collingwood NSW Supporters club yesterday. They are mega keen on supporting the venue as well. It would be great if the Swans were pro-active in getting them to go to the club and watch AFL matches there with their fellow supporters club members. They are dead set keen on holding a Grand Final function there. (Swans office-it would be awesome if you guys could be pro-active in looking at developing such an event with the grass roots footy public.)

It would be great if the place became a haven for AFL footy in Sydney. And not JUST a Swans club. Sometimes I reckon you have to look at the bigger picture of things, I reckon.

Interesting vibe there. Had a bit of a "21st" birthday party thing going on. They also need to get a new projector to see the game better (and future away games).

I nearly collapsed when I bought a schooner of beer and a large coke for $2.70 (present your Social Club Membership card for a discount).

The players seemed to be more relaxed and open then usual at the noble after-match function. Having food there saved it a bit - we started getting hungry and agitated until it started to come around.

Parking at the cross is $9 when you flash your Social Club membership. Shuttle bus was quick and easy (no line to get on from the game).

From what Colless said at the prematch address in the toffs lounge (yes, I somehow cracked an invite) they want to really push this venue.

For my money - watching the Eagles v Roos Wizard at the Aussie with SwansGirl - they need to spend some big dollaray on the tellies. Or in other words .. head down to Bing Lee and swap 'em for some decent plasmas!! It's a business after all.

I too will support rthe effort .. but insist on 21st century technology. The days of watching that faded out old rear screen at Easts is too painful to bear thinking about again.

We really enjoyed it. The players seemed like they were having fun paying each other out.

I think the problem with the Noble after match is a lot of people use it as a venue to catch up with friends who sit in different parts of the ground, so Luffy and the players/coaches are constantly battling to be heard over the noise of everyone's conversations. At the Aussie Rules club there are bars on other levels that people can have a drink and a chat if they don't want to listen to the players.

FWIW they were broadcasting the players talking throughout the soundsystem in the club. I thought that was pretty cool.

                Hey Jf,

If you read your member email you would have known that you can park all day at the Kings Cross Parking Station for $9, catch a free bus to the game, and then catch a bus back to the club in the cross after the game. This bus after the match runs for 1 hour.

That would remove the need to repark, and it is cost effective i would think.

I also understand from the Swans Magazine that there are a number of Development Applications in with the council to redevelop parts of the club, which will make it great for all of us.
