i'm suprised at the level of dissent over abletts selection given that the other 2 options of spriggs and fosdike have been continually bagged on these boards
There is no dissent. If you read the thread, only d&m and I are befuddled by the decision.
I simply don't understand, that's all. A week ago, Spriggs and Fosdike were supposed to be very close to selection. Then, we need a quick player with proven endurance, and they are both overlooked. It is odd.

We hate Shannon Grant too
We hate scumbag Gaspar
But Leo WE LOVE YOU!
I reckon they picked Ablett so that if we get bogged down in another flood situation at the end of the game we'll have a player we can dish the ball off to about 65-70m from goal and he'll have a fair chance of kicking it. I'd love to see that.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way you'll be a mile away and he'll be shoeless.
It's bloody good to see the selectors are going for class.
Of course we had to go with Ablett, he is a very talented player and if he succeeds, the Swans become more skilful.
Spriggs and Fossie are hacks if they succeed and retain their spot in the team the over all skill level of the team goes down.
Dempster next.
Well done P.Roos

That's what I thought too.
If Ablett was ahead of Fosdike for the finals last year and Spriggs was a draft pick up to provide added depth then nothing this pre season suggested that order had changed. Ablett is the right selection.
Good decision. One of Ablett's weaknesses is that he needed to find the ball more. His pre season form although against weak opposition he seemed to address this weakness by having a few games with 20 + possessions.
Oh did i mention his 75 metre or so goal?

Yeah, but Ablett wasn't available last week (or, to be more correct, wasn't considered for selection) so those comments only relate to selection for Rd 1. Ablett is clearly considered, at this moment, more talented and in better form (not to mention being able to slot in as a genuine half forward flanker and having played well against the Roos recently) - hence pick the best player available.
Didn't he get 40 possessions in a practice match?

I am glad NOG is playing. I saw a truck early yesterday morning with a kangaroo wrapped aroung the bull bar. The name on the driver's door: ABLETT HAULAGE.

Only $1 for a cornetto that is DAYLIGHT SAVINGS!!!!!
As the RWO preview states, Norff are a better attacking team than defensive, with lots of running. That's their strength.
If we select a running-type player (ie. Fos or Spriggs), we are playing their game and to their strengths. By choosing a stronger, attacking midfielder, we play to our strength -- and their weakness.
If NOG can get a good number of touches and/or goals early on in the game, Norff will be forced to tag him and therefore reduce their running/attacking options by 1 -- which is all we would have achieved by selecting another tagger anyway.
To all those people who waited 72 years to see a South Melbourne/Sydney Swans premiership HERE IT IS!!

I can't really foresee a time when any team would bother tagging Ablett.
