    Reality Check

One loss and RWO is collectively slashing its wrist, bashing the coach and looking for the next whipping boy. I know a lot of it has been tongue in cheek, but it?s time for a bit of perspective.

Swans have generally been around mid table after 8 rounds and our final ladder position has been determined by how we have travelled in the guts of the season. I would expect this year will be no different. More important than winning all the early games - win enough to get top 4, be relatively injury free and have wining momentum come September.

If Swans are 2-6 or worse after 8 rounds, start the wrist slashing. Otherwise, hang on for the ride.

Year Start After 8 rounds After 22 Rounds Final Ladder Position
    1996 0-2 4-3-1 16-5-1 1
    1997 0-2 then 2-3 3-5 12-10 6
    1998 5-0 6-2 14-8 4
    1999 1-4 4-4 11-11 8
    2000 3-0 3-5 10-12 10
    2001 3-0 3-5 12-10 7
    2002 2-2 3-4-1 9-12-1 11
    2003 1-3 5-3 14-8 4
    2004 0-1 then 3-1 3-5 13-9 6

      F*&^*ing journey!!

What's also similar about each of those years is that we have not a flag in any of them.

Teams that have won flags have usually started better, or they finish with an amazing run.

      Port
      2004 5-1

      Brisbane
      2003 5-0-1
      2002 6-1
2001 4-3 (finishing the season with 16 straight wins)

      Essendon
      2000 21-1

      Kangaroos
      1999 1-3 (and then won 19 of next 21)
      1996 5-1

      Adelaide - the major exception.

Under Roos Sydney's best run is 4 wins in a row. Under Eade Sydney's best run was 8 in a row in '96 and 5 in a row after that.

Besides '96, we rarely see Sydney in a scintillating run that peaks in finals. I doubt if we can rely on this changing - we need a good even performance during the year and make the most of all our chances.

i say bugger the past and all the stats and bugger last week, lets just focus on having the next 20 games.

The swans must forget the dismal kangas game and play with spirit and courage and im sure they can and will be successful. I dont care if thats blind faith and some stupid journey, i love the team and will support them no matter what

I remember those years, and still can't believe how they made a mess of a 3-0 start TWICE!

I think the most interesting one is that Brisbane were 4-5 after Round 9 in 2001, then won 17 straight. I'm pretty sure they got flogged a couple of times in the first 9 rounds too!

IIRC a win over the then-top of the table Essendon was the catalyst for their amazing run. If the Swans are to have any chance this year, it would have to take a similar landmark win like vs Melbourne in 2003.

When do we play Port @ SCG? If we win this, it could provide the spark needed to get their confidence and belief back to 2003 levels.

Pity the Saints game last year didn't have the same effect....
