    on the couch

sorry if its in another thread already.

Anyone see them discuss the swans at the start, walls particularly was disgusted. Said it seems roos is coaching to be a finalist coach (6-8) and that is worth nothing!

Do you agree with their point that for 18 months that the style of footy we play has become more and more ugly?

as people on here would agree(like NMWbloods) i tend to follow the team blindly and think they will win anyway :P

but of course i have no choice but to agree, i dont care if we play boring and win, but i think we play ugly football that is costing us wins. We are developing youngsters into the same mould as well, so they end up playing the same way.
Like walls said we get the ball on the back flank and happily kick out of bounds on half forward to contest another stoppage.

Im not worried about how attractive it is to watch, but they currently play too short and ineffective and go to wide. When they win games its usually because for some period of the game they played good solid football in bursts, like against the kangaroos the burst never game, they never really started and they lost!

      rambling on sorry! :P

Walls makes some big statements about players and teams(OVER RATES A LOT) but as an ex coach he does say some pertinent things about tactics and finer points of the game.

But what he said last night was spot on and exactly what most RWO'ers are saying. It was like sticking a knife in and twisting a few times. Many other commentators on radio are saying exactly the same.

He said straight out there is no way we can win a flag playing this style, simply because it is too dour and is too much to expect players to do it well week in week out.

On the Roos coaching for his job bit. It would surprise me given Roos's competetive nature but it is looking very familiar to other coaches.

Saw Clarkson on White Line Fever and wonder how long will he last. Needs a lot of work on his media skills and said bugger all.
I suspect, reading between the lines, he feels has little to work with.

What I found astonishing abt OTC last nite was that both Walls and Healy admitted they'd watched only a few games. You'd think watching football would be their job?

Healy was ready to crucify Swans after admitting he'd only see them play one qr this year. And Walls damned the Dockers after 'fessing up that he only watched the last 8 mins of the Saints game.

            Very strange....

Sheahan one suspects does watch all the games.

That is why when a team gets a name for a certain brand of footy it sticks in the media, no matter if they changed their style in the last 12 to 18 months.

There are a number of media commentators who will sit down and watch all the games (Sheahan is one and from Dermott says he will also watch during the week all the games). But most will see the game they cover and probably just the Firday night, how you can offer you thoughts and opinions on all 8 games is beyond me when you have not actually seen it.

Agreed. Swans were cast as the villains by all & sundry for Staurday's mind-numbing efforts but the way I saw it Norths started with the spare man in defence.

The first few times we played "direct" footy Archer just floated down for an easy grab. It would have been nonsensical to have continued playing that way.

But much easier to run the old "negative Swans" line than actually watch the replay. Not that I blame them for not watching the replay....

A single loose man in defence is not really unusual nor is it the main cause of flooding or ugly football. Essendon did it to Carlton (Fletcher) on Friday night, and it was very effective, however Carlton was able to counter it.

I also find it strange though that these guys don't watch most of the games. I usually watch a couple each week, and if I was in the media I would try to watch at least 5 each week and every team at least two weeks out of three.

Supporter Instincts Aren't Bad - Paul Roos
It's still early days but it seems that those of us who supported Roosy for this job GOT IT RIGHT.

Those few Melbourne experts (Wallsy and KB) who watched us at the end of last year saw the way that Paul Roos likes his teams to play, and these are the only guys that rated us.

The formula seems to be relatively simple but all 22 have to contribute for 4 quarters.

Seems Roosy has placed more emphasis on the game starting from half-back. He was the best centre half-back from '84 to '97 so it's not surprise that the team he coaches has the best rebound from HB.

When it comes down to it, we don't have a list of superstars in the midfield or down back, but when everyone runs, it's irrisistable footy. One thing we do have is very able forwards.

Paul Roos has only just begun, he is keeping the lid on and we might even play a final or 2 this year and if we don't, we'll just end up playing good footy all year, I enjoy the entertainment.

Boy will next year be exciting!

I found this when I used the words Exciting Footy in the search engine here at RWO and found my own post by accident.

The mantra from the time was that Roosy would be testing players and asking them to play their natural games so he could unearth our future superstars. It worked on a number of unexpected levels in 2003.

I think Roosy is searching for the balance between that exciting form of 2003 and the stuff we dish up when we have loads of injuries. Finding that controlled middle ground is the challenge. I think we'll find our true form again soon. We certainly have the talent, nothing has changed there.

Some panellists on the Sunday morning show said that the Roos are one of the biggest flooders but don't get the publicity. Laidley certainly is into shutting down tactics as much as the next man.

Are Walls, Healy and Sheahan all full time football commentators / analysts? If I paid their cheque I would expect them to be watching every game and not goofing off on message boards all day.
