    Take a Punt on Schmidt

    Time to inject someone with decent ball skills into the midfield who can not only get the footy but knows how to deliver it into the forward line. Schmidt in my mind is well worth a try, in the games I have seen him play his ball skills and his good tackling have stood out even if he only had 12 possessions if each one found a target in the forward 50 the exercise would have been worth it.

    On another matter has Jason Saddington really bulked up as was mentioned in a post a couple of months ago, unlike some fellow posters I think he still has plenty to offer I remember his game on Chris Tarrant a couple of years ago Tarrant was almost kickless till the last quarter, if indeed he has muscled up a bit he may yet play a major role in our quest for the flag.

      Why not - I'm sure our midfield can't be any worse!

          Good memory NMWBLOODS Tarrant did kick a few in the last quarter and if I remember correctly he out muscled Jason on several occasions so with some extra bulk that may not happen in future, but to be fair Tarrant is a handy player.

              Hopefully they are on opposite trajectories - Tarrant was good, although inconsistent, but seems to be getting worse. Maybe Saddington will gradually get better!

              Re midfielders - I would love us to throw a heap of the young guys in there over a number of weeks, and give them a bit of time to try it out. You never know what it will turn up.

                  Yep excellent idea, sad about Willoughby if the knee injury is a serious one he could be missing for a while.

                      Yep, if we're gonna be dinkum about the alleged depth of this squad, then we need to give the young 'uns a chance when the incumbents haven't performed.

                                  And if remember rightly the Pies DID actually win and Tarrant kicked three in the last.

                                  Although, in due respect to Saddo, one of the goals Tarrant kicked in the last qrtr came about after Saddo attacked the ball out of the goal square (as you should), whereby the ball took a shocking bounce about 19,000 feet high before Saddo could get to it, straight into Tarrant's lap about 7.2 metres out - total arse that one.....

                                      Tarrant did it 2 years in a row to us. In 2002 they beat us. But in 2003 (the game in which Davis kicked the last goal) he nearly won it for them in the last qtr. Collingwood had been smacked in the midfield, so consequently we were about 7 goals in front at 3 Qtr time, then all of a sudden they gained the ascendancy in the midfield, and he went on a rampage. Luckily we held on by about 3 goals.

                                          That's right - he did it two years in a row; I think 'Pies won the first time (2002) when he kicked 4 goals, and we won the second time (2003) when he kicked 5 goals.

                                          I went through the latter game in a lot of detail last year as I rewatched it. Tarrant was quiet in the first 3 qtrs mainly because Saddington played about 5-10m in front of Tarrant and Collingwood would kick the ball straight to him rather than the leading Tarrant. In the last quarter, they kicked it longer and Saddington had to play up close to Tarrant and was soundly beaten time and time again.

                                                      He's been saying for 5 years that he's going to bulk up, but still doesn't possess any natural body strengh, nor the nous to use his body correctly in a marking contest.

                                                          I think Ian is asking about Saddington and not Tarrant

                                                          Saddington is now officially listed at 93kg - apparently put on something like six kilos in the off season - hopefully not fat but muscle.

                                                          As long as it doesn't affect his mobility it should be a good thing - won't know until we see him I guess
