    new maxfield thread

I thought I would start a new maxfield thread, because invariably these threads ujust result in a couple of people having tiny converstaions and not talking about the original topic

    couple of things

    1) under no circumstances can maxfield be dropped from the team
Why? Imagine the unneccesary controversey that would be result from a captain being dropped.

    2) Maxfield's current play reminds a little of wayne schwass in 2002, clearly at the end, he no longer seems to have time when in possession, his kicking is poor.

    3) If maxfield is too no longer play it must be because he retires, during his retirement he admits he was holding some young kids back and that was to the detriment of the team. It is terrible that mcveigh is playing in the reserves rather than the seniors. When maxfield retires, there has to be a ready made replacement for him, who is appointed straight away. I think this should be Barry Hall or Brett Kirk, our 2 most consistent players.

    4) If maxfield is to continue playing, he has to become an impact player, similar to damien hardwick last year for port. Starting in the centre crashing in hard, being left responsible for perhaps the oppositions least dangerous midfielder and playing porbably only 10 minutes a quarter.

That is just a few thoughts, I don't think we can just go and sack our captain, he will either retire or play on.

This is all hypothetical if it does get to this stage but I would imagine that the club would have a quiet word with Stu if they had questions over his selection in the team and give him the chance to bow out with dignity. However, I sincerely hope that the club would refuse to drop him if he decided not to take up the offer to bow out on his own terms. Quite simply, if he doesn't deserve his place on form, he can't be retained in the 22 simply because he is captain.

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Cannt see how he could captain while playing as an impact player. If he is the captain, he should play like one too.

The best scenario is for him to manufacture a reason to step down, either through suspension or some injuries. We will need him back towards the end of the year when younger bodies are usually already battered so about 10-12 week break serves everyone right.

It is already bad when your captain is not in the best 12. It is ridiculous when the captain is competing with fringe players for the last spot in the team. The man should step down and take a break.

He needs to hit someone to get suspended. Crows players should be scare in getting near anywhere near him.

maxfield doesnt like being an impact player much

i think he has some serious thinking to do over the next few weeks for the good of the team. I thinkl holding a player who doesnt deserve a spot in the team is worse than a mid season exit by the captain.!!

even last years premiers dealt with changing captains

Only if we are languishing at the bottom of the table out of finals contention will Stuey step down or be dropped.

While we are looking like playing finals there is no way he would step down or be dropped.

Um, didn't Paul Kelly have a very poor second last year while captain? Then he decided that he'd trhow everything into his last year. He may not have been the Kel of old but he contributed.

We have the luxury of a tiny injury list right now. If Stewie left, I bet we'd be missing him befor ethe end of the year. And I presume noone thinks that Stewie is keeping someone out of the team who should be captain? I'm not convinced that his place would be filled with someone showing more merit as a player, either. There's a good chance we'll continue to get drive out of the old Maxfield/Williams warhorses in the midfield yet. And achieving for the captain is an important incentive - did you see Baz go straight across to Stewie at the end of the Gabba game?

Really?!? Might well be right, I haven't paid close enough attention. Goodes and LRT have both frustrated me up forward with this apparent inability so I could be wrong

I would have thought Back Pocket would suit him better. He can take the kick ins and use his long kick without being under pressure.

well sorry for not thinking maxifeld was in good form!!!

why should we carry a captain into the finals series if he is having no impact on victory??

Has any player ever retired midseason, not due to injury and not due to being dropped, when a team is on track to make the finals? Maybe they have, but i doubt it.

How many captains have ever been dropped from a team that is consistently winning (i.e. on track to make the finals) when they are fit? I dout if any have.

I may be wrong. But I personally think that because he is captain he will not be dropped while we are on track to make the finals, despite his form. This is regardless of if his form warrants it or not.

It is the same issue as when both Steve Waugh and Tubby Taylor were struggling, but they werent dropped while the team continued to be successful.

your right it wont happen and maxfield is probably not under any pressure within the team. I just think its hard to find a spot for him in our best 22 this year and it might cost us in the finals to be carrying a captain.
