Maybe clearances from defensive 50? A high number from midfielders / half forwards would be an indicator of flooding.

Actually, the number of possessions in the defensive 50 by midfielders wouldn't be a bad start.

Yeah - I remembered that one of the sites used to have possessions and their locations. This would give some indication of forwards and midfielders getting the ball down in the backline. However, it wouldn't be totally indicative because a lot of the flooding would not produce disposal statistics, so I wonder if there are other things (which I guess they are as the teams have an enormous amount of statistics on all sorts of things these days).

Obviously at that stage, any coach is going to want numbers back, the problem is when a team,or both teams, start with that sort of mindset.

This has been my problem with the swans of late. Why not come out strong, play through the middle and take risks. Then if you start getting belted, change the gameplan. Why not risk early when the scores are level and there is plenty of time left??

Yep, these are the problems I have. Nothing wrong with flooding at various points during the game, but hardly much need to do it straight away. Why not come out firing, kick a few goals, then slow things down, then do it again. This is how tempo basketball works.

did you see garry hockings version of flooding?? all players in the defensive 50 didnt even contest the ruck

My observation is our midfielders don't get a lot of the footy in our forward 50. Hence we don't have prolific/regular mid field goal kickers.

Some of the midfielders get back and others lurk between the 50 metre arcs.Eg.Maxfield. Mathews seems to work in the zone from 30 metres out up to the centre wing and is usually on the end of a pass. Craig Bolton gets back deep and sweeps across the full back line whereas Leo, well I don't where he lurks, only that it is in the backline. Only Leo knows this.

Jude Bolton seems to rarely venture into the F50 and appears to hover between the 2 x 50 metre arcs and preys on the stoppages. Kennelly looks like he plays more of a one on one role and runs off his opponent. I must check to see who he plays on
as I suspect he picks up the slowest forward.

Willo seems to be the on baller who gets well back into the D50, then runs like mad as we carry the ball forward. Must have amazing fitness. Kirk and Crouch naturally get back as they run with the best ball getters of the opposition, although you rarely see Crouch up forward whereas Kirk regularly gives himself a chance of a goal.

Over their careers Kirk has a higher goal per game rate than Crouch but he started as a HFF under Eade while Crouch has played in the back pocket a lot. With both of them playing primarily in the midfield last year Crouch scored 8 and Kirk 10, so there's not that much of a difference there.

As to Kennelly playing on the slowest forward, would seem a waste if he does. He can burn off pretty much anyone in the league when he set's his mind to it - certainly anyone other than the really small, quick mids and forwards. Both Akermanis and Power failed to catch him on Sat night. I suspect he plays on the least experienced forward for much of the time to give him more freedom to run, but often he lands up with someone big, strong and experienced when he's the only one left over.

Ahhh that third quarter 3 possession run. Beautiful.

Has anyone else noticed Kirk kind of drops the ball to one side then kicks "around" it? Might have something to do with the fact that his kicks tend to loop up, and also his lack of penetration.

They put that on news here in the west, basically every Peel palyer was in there DF 50 at the restart of play the opposition ruckman grabbed the ball out of the air as the ruck wasnt contested handballed to the nearest midfielder who handballed it to the next midfielder they had ten touches and werent out of the centre sqaure yet. the whole team was so stunned that they just did not know what to do with the footy bloody bizzare! Garry Hocking has to face the WAFC this morning with a masive please explain.

They talked to Buddha on White Line Fever and apparently he wanted to teach his team the value of playing man on man by showing them how ridiculous it was to try and defend by flooding. Or something like that....

Whatever it was...he claimed he was trying to teach his players something...maybe what a useless coach he is
