Our Midfield

Davis must become our no. 1 midfielder. he's got the skills, just needs the fitness to match, but it seems to be improving. Ablett is also showing promise. J.Bolton is doing a fine job at the moment and Kirk is too. Willo is getting a bit long in the tooth, but he still has plenty to provide. we desperately need McVeigh to get some quality time in the midfield and show some major improvement.

Maxfield is done, it is sad to say he is now past his use-by date. Spriggs may have the fitness, but his skills are attrocious, and I have little faith he can change that. The team as a whole have poor skills at the moment, but most of that can probably be put down to lack of confidence, but I dont believe this is the case for Spriggs, his skill deficiencies are terminal.

the hobbits:
schneider, buchanan, bevan - all 3 need time in the 2s. they just arent performing anywhere near the level required.

For the next 2 years, I think we have to base our midfield around Davis, Kirk, J.Bolton, Ablett and Willo. Hopefully McViegh can step up. At least one of the hobbits needs to dramatically improve, and we need to at least give a chance to some of the ressies like Willhoughby, Malceski, Moore, Schmitt.

I also dont think we can form a successful midfield around guys like Fosdike, Mathews, or Crouch, while Fixter and Sundqvist have to go coz they are just taking up space on the list.

Yeah! When is Sundqvist going to ever play?

Most of our players have the skills but they just aren't showing it.

Sunny should have been cut last year.

The reason they don't improve is because they can't.

The reason they don't improve is because they can't.

The reason Sunny WASN'T cut is because he's shown that if he gets up there, there is a very good chance he'll be useful. Unfortunately injuries (including his ACL rupture last year) have not allowed him to show this, and when he is fit again, I'm hoping to see a lot out of him, because he was showing some good glimpses. If either he a) doesn't get fit enough to play (which I highly doubt) or b) doesn't show it, then I think this year is the end of the road, but to just say he should have been cut is unfair to him, and to the team, if he can stand up.

I suggested to delist him and then put him on the rookie list, because the kid has talent and has been held back by a knee injury just as he was about to get a solid run in the seniors. Plus he has some thing that our other midfielders don't have and thats good foot skills.

The problem with the delist->rookie thing was that given when his knee injury occurred, he will be right to play sooner rather than later this season (touch wood), and if he's worth that much to the club, it's not worth putting him on the rookie list and hoping someone will end up with a long-term injury - better to leave him on the seniors list which then means he can play the week he's right to do so and not have to rely on luck other than he remains injury free.

Does anyone agree with me that i think our midfielders skills arn't THAT bad, but the cause of our constant mistakes are the crap style of fotty we play, because of it, no-one ever gets a clear kick or some space to run into. It's very difficult for ANY midfielder to hit a forward on the tit with half the opposition baring down on you.

McVeigh needs to put on more bulk, he was pushed around too easily last night.

Strewth Slick have a look at the game please. Week in week out we get the pill in the clear but kick 5-10 metres short of a leading player. They just can't hit a bloke on the chest.

I suggest the culprits as punishment get into a boxing ring with Barry Hall at training and see if they improve. They are bloody sub standard to say the least. Maxfield comes back into the side and feeds the footy to the opposing backs. Schneider can't kick more than a metre off the ground and what is the point of Buchanan even kicking it.

Last night I noticed another thing we do when a forward is leading, and that is they continually kick to side the opponent is on. O'Loughlin and Hall were so frustrated. It means that a clean mark is never an option barring miracles.

When these things keep happening you must wonder what in the hell the specialist coaches are teaching

i agree with most of your points but I do think Fosdike and Sunny (when fit) are capable of making a difference, I would like to see them in before Mc (most overated early draft pick ever)Veigh and Buchanan.

Really good point about Davis he has all the skills and he is much more valuable to us providing good long delivery to our forward line rather than swanning around FP and kicking a few goals every 3rd game.

Another one I would throw out there is to move Crouch forward as our small crumbing forward, he has great hands, pace and is a great crumber plus a good shot for goal on the run.

Im thinking you cant have Spriggs Buchanan Schnieder McVeigh Crouch Mathews and Nicks all in the team at the same time.

I do think we have some of the players we need to make a difference but does our coaching staff have the courage to take a chance and start making changes?

I was commenting on this after our game against Melbourne. Other teams kick long into the forward line, but the kick is directed to advantage of the forward. When we kick long to the forward line, it's usually over the forward's head or to the advantage of the defender. When passing directly, it's not a lot better.
