Do you want priority picks?

It just proves my point that it becomes an attractive option for clubs. Solution? I think either;
1. The removal of priority picks

or

2. A straight up "lottery" type draft where the draft order is detrmined at random, round by round. E.g. you could have the number three pick in the first round, but by round 2, they would draw the names again, i.e if you had pick three you wouldn't neccessarily have pick 19....

Look to the NBA draft system (though I think they changed it).

Whoever does not make the playoffs gets put into a lottery for the first draft picks. The playoff bound draft in their finishing order.

The AFL should also look at perhaps a different contract system to make getting out of contract players and trades more attractive and avaliable to clubs - The NFL system works great.

That's a bit silly for it to be complete random.

I like the NBA model. these are the 14 teams that didn't make the playoffs, and they are in order from worst record to best. and the chances indicate how many chances in 1000 they have of getting the 1st pick.

Tanking a season is not an option. However, giving all the kids a run to see if they can cut it at the top level is another matter. Giving the kids a run is the prelude to a general cleaning out of the playing list, and many on here have been suggesting this.

On priority picks, that is a bit of a lottery, depending on how other teams finish. For example, West Coast drafted Judd with a priority pick, but at pick 3 (three teams had priority picks that year). In another season, pick 3 might be the second normal pick because only one team has a priority pick.

I think playing all the kids two at a time, winning enough games to avoid the spoon and securing an early pick is the way to go. If we finished 14th with 6 wins, and the teams below us had priority picks, we'd get our first pick at pick 5. That's quite decent. 14th with 5 wins gives us picks 3 and 6. That's even better, but I don't see that happening.

I think the issue here is with priority picks, not the order of the normal draft picks which I think is fine.
