    Captain by remote

They can talk this up all they like but I don't the idea our Cap is spending half a week away from Sydney particularly given his and our current form.

Why can't he judge? He's not judging whether Maxfield should see his kids (and I think family comes way before football) - he's simply having an opinion that it seems unreasonable for a captain to be effective when commuting.

I think that Maxfield should now definately hand over the captaincy to someone else.

I agree. I sympathise on his situation, but its in his best interest, and the teams best interest to have a full time captain in Sydney.

I'd say it would take a bit of pressure off him too, which might improve his play.

And improve the performance of whoever takes over the reigns (spelling?). I don't know how much more you could squeeze out of Kirk, Jude or Goodesy at the moment.
                  Give to McVeigh I say!

More important question is, is the role of a captain still as important as it use to be? Would it make any difference for the team (and how they're playing) if they select another player to be a captain?
I'm not so sure about that, not so early in the season. In the end it's a Stewie's call.

Maxfield will spend the early part of the week in Melbourne and return to Sydney on Wednesday night or Thursday morning for the team's main training on Thursday afternoon.
It's not like the players are dating; they don't spend every minute with each other. Does anyone here actually know how much time Maxfield was spending with team mates during the first part of the week? I doubt the move will make any real difference.

Its not just how much time he spends with other players but also how much time he spends with the coaching staff. I would have thought that it would be important for the captain to spend time with the coach discuss and analyse the previous weekend's game. He will also be absent from the post game training session (the swim at Coogee etc).

Wot NMW said. I'm not judging his want/need to see his kids just his capacity to captain the team while spending half the week out of town.

For the record I have 3 young ones and having occasionally seen Maxfield at Auskick with them for the last year or two I understand his desire to be with his family.

It's no different to any work/life balance issue, it's rare if you can have the best of both worlds and make it work, sacrifices have to be made somewhere.

I think it is an ideal time/excuse to give the captaincy to someone else (I think Jude Bolton is the best long term choice). Not being captain takes pressure off Maxfield and would allow him to concentrate on his own game. Also, and more importantly, It would allow the Swans to drop him if his form does not warrant a place in the starting 22.
