I have worked it all out now!

Nah, I worked it all out now. He made the comments in the hope that the Swans would get upset at them, which they duly did. He in his wish for AFL Global domination, was actually doing it to fire the Swans up out of their present-day lethargy. He knew that the Swans are crucial to the development of the game in Sydney, so was just doing his bit to get them all twitchy behind the ears. Getting Barry mad for example means he may well play more vigourous passionate attacking footy....we hope!

The promotions offshoot out of all this has been that there has been media attention given to the Swans and AFL in sydney that there otherwise would not have been.

He IS starting to work out the Sydney market and how to generate publicity in it, it seems. Even if it was actually quite inadvertant.

I agree - case of hitting a team when it's down. It would have been far more defendable had he made those comments last year when we were "winning ugly". As it is he has stuck the boot into a team that has been variously without a ruckman, its most creative midfielder and its regular full-back over the last few weeks, is out of form and lacking in confidence.

      Cruel and cowardly IMO.

Demetriou claims it was a "personal opinion". Mate, when you are head of an organisation such as the AFL you don't have "personal opinions". Everything you think, do and say is a influenced by, or a direct consequence of, your position in that organisation.

This embarrassing faux pas is yet another example of why Demetriou should never have been given the top job. He simply lacks the required class.

We may have a bit of a cry and sook about how unfair Demetriou is to single us out, but the focus on our poor performance is so miniscule compared to the roastings underperforming teams get in proper football states, it's still pretty soft.

What's a "proper football state"? You must mean Queensland as the Courier Mail is regularly doing a player-by-player deconstruct of the Lions up there.

You certainly couldn't mean SA where the Advertiser is going easier on Port than the SMH is on the Swans. And you can't mean Victoria where the two teams at the bottom of the ladder are being given considerable encouragement rather than a bagging.

But you are missing the point of the AFL attack on the Swans. It's one thing if you are underperforming in your workplace and your fellow workers and your supervisors point it out. But you'd probably be a bit peeved if you woke up one morning to find that every radio news and newspaper was reporting that your boss had publically said "NMWBloods is not only terrible - he's bringing the whole organisation into disrepute".

After 3 flags, Brisbane can probably not worry about needing to be roasted.

Given they won a flag last year, they sort of win a reprieve. In other years they have been more aggressive at underperformance.

Encouragement? I read frequently, this year and in past years, of players not performing well and teams not performing well and how they need to improve.

I agreed it was not the most appropriate thing for the CEO to do. However, placing us under the spotlight for a change is not necessarily a bad thing.
