Jude is an offensive midfielder. Kirk also probably plays offensively as often as defensively these days. But they're both inside players with limitations when using the ball (though they're both far from hopeless.

As for offensive outside midfielders, I think Goodes and Davis are by far our best bets. And I guess McVeigh. (And Willo, when he comes back).

Goodes disposal is not always the best, and I don't recall ever seeing him kick a goal from 50. I think Fosdike has the best disposal at the club (amongst those that have played seniors).

Agreed - but he is creative and has good vision. And he can win his own ball too. His goalkicking is generally not great, nor is his contested marking - these are reasons why I think he's more valuable in the midfield.

Agreed - they should be our 3rd and 4th midfielders.

Goodes' main problem is questionable disposal (and decision making at times). Davis could be. McVeigh - we'll see.

Willo definitely is the only true offensive midfielder we have, but we won't have him that much longer.

Easy to fix - compulsory Stenchathon (no bathing) for all midfielders until they win. They'll be quite offensive after a week or two. The team song after the game would wilt a redwood, make the paint peel and perish all plastic in the vicinity. Thus, the team song would probably be done after a celebratory shower.

What do you mean by "offensive midfielder" here? I thought Willo was an attacking midfielder; his ability to kick goals on the run from outside 50 is legendary. A player may be an attacking midfielder but currently not played in that position due to the game plan.

Yep, Willo is the archetypal OM, but he's out. Other than that, w don't have anyone. I've always thought Kennelly could do it, but who knows if we'll ever see it.

That just makes you a midfielder with poor defensive skills.

I think to be offensive you need to be a threat, guide play forward as a playmaker, set up attacks, drive the ball I50 to the forwards' advantage, run with the ball, and kick goals. Be a threat in other words.

that is why I think playing LRT is Roos masterstroke. If he is turning out good, we would have a good future. If he turns out crook, we will have a good draft pick. Nothing to loose for us really. Instead, I think we could start dropping a Mathews or a Crouch out of the seniors. Cannot see how we could win a flag while they are in. They have gone as far as they could and that is still not good enough to get us over the line.

I can see why you'd think that - he's got the right build, he's fast, his skills are supposed to be good - but at present he doesn't seem to cope well in heavy traffic. The time seems right for a move to the wing, which should give us a chance to see whether he could take the next step to ruck rover.

I think the guy getting the ball out from the bottom of the pack is just as important to setting up our attack as the guy who runs/kicks it forward.

Of course it would be great to have a swarm of players who could do both!

It could probably have done with a comma after 'captain, but otherwise I stand by it.

The sentance may be a little turgid, but I wanted to differentiate between Maxfield as a bad captain--regarding leadership--which he isn't, and Maxfield as a bad player--who is also captain--which he is.
