    Roos: Tough decisions imminent

    This from AFL.COM.AU
This is a difficult time for Paul Roos one would imagine.

    Tough decisions imminent: Roos

Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos believes the club needs to do some ?soul-searching? and make some tough decisions after going down to Hawthorn by 42 points at the MCG on Saturday night.

The loss - the club?s third straight after starting 2003 with a thumping 74-point victory against Carlton at Telstra Stadium - has prompted Roos to look at blooding younger players sooner than he and the club might have anticipated.

?We?ve got some soul-searching I guess as a club and certainly as a team,? Roos said.

After four weeks - and more significantly three straight losses - the Swans coach regarded the next 18 weeks as a ?pretty important? time for the club and where it was headed.

?We always looked at this year as a rebuilding year. We?ve got to make sure we make decisions in the long-term best interests of the club,? Roos said.

?You try and play younger players. Even today we had Luke Ablett and Adam Schneider. We?re trying to feed them in. You can?t throw them in all at once because sometimes their confidence can get dented and you can actually get them off to a worse start in their football career.

?You like to filter them in with some senior players and make sure the games are competitive. That?s where you?ve got to be careful. We?ve got to make some important decisions as to where and how we filter those young guys in.

?At the end of last season we made a decision not to trade our number one pick and we got a couple of quality young kids in the door. We may need to play them a bit sooner than what we thought based on tonight?s performance.?

Regarding Sydney?s senior players, Roos opened the possibility of a few not seeing out the season in the club?s best 22.

?If you think guys aren?t up to it you have to make a decision. Sometimes you have to be a bit ruthless.?

Reflecting on the match, Roos thought Sydney - which kicked the opening three goals - matched the Hawks early on, but gave up the ball far too easily.

?I think the main problem tonight was that we kept turning the footy over. It just went down the other end of the ground and they scored.

?I?ve said it a lot of times before, the footy is like gold. If you?re giving away easy goals, it makes it hard to win footy games.?

?The end result was pretty ordinary again.?

Big test for him as coach IMO.

Lets see if he bights the bullet and actually does something.

Is he reading here or what. This is what most have been saying all week. Give the kids a chance and drop the McPherson's. It can only make us better
      Once was, now elsewhere

Yeah I also think that this is the first major hurdle for Roosy, If he plays out the next 5 to 8 weeks well, (not in terms of wins but in terms of exposure to new players and development of different team psyche), then it will be the major cornerstone on which he will build the kernal of his premeirship team. Get it wrong and it could be a long slid down hill into coaching oblivion. WOW it's so exciting !!

Roosy has to be careful especially with Brisbane and Coll'wood coming up soon

start with Nicks, he has had too many chances and ,aside from one goal, was beyond redemption last night. How he can possibly suggest(as he did in the SMH) that he was playing well this year is beyond me.He cost us two goals with his appalling errors last night and he still thinks he is leadership material....maybe of the WeeWAA thirds.....
ok, why pick on him?He is a senior player and was supposed to LEAD......
Ithought he made MCP. look like a brownlow medalist.

Very difficult for roosie, but I think he must bite the bullet here. This season has gone already thanks to the bulk of our players' dumb performances, and they should pay the price for those gutless, skillless (???), efforts these past three weeks.
The melbourne game on anzac day would be a good opportunity to blood a couple of the youngsters, as putting them in for the wallopings we will receive against the wobbles and the lions will only dent their confidence further (as if playing 4 the underachieving swans hasn't dented them enough)...
I like the players who make our team...I like Leo and Frosty and Saddo and Mathews and Nicks, but quite frankly they are letting us down and I think it time to give them a run in the 2s...or 4s or 8s (whatever the ACTAFL standard is)....
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

Maybe they need to do what most companies have moved towards over the last few years - shifting the risk back onto the employees (in this case players) - incentive pay.

Reduce their guaranteed salaries, and pay more based purely on performance. That will give them a real shake. You want decent money, go out and EARN it by playing good football. If you don't, you get some but not nearly as much as you are now for playing with no passion or effort.

                  I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Only one problem ... You CAN'T - under the salary cap you must pay between 92.5% and 100% of the cap. Gee - a 7.5% pay cut (max) that won't hurt them. And its too difficult anyway, allowing for injury payments etc which must all be taken into account!

WHO judges the quality of their play compared to the pay they receive? It can't solely be on win/loss ratio.
