Rucking - Goodes Ball & Jolly?

I have been thinking about this and I would be interested how others are thinking about it.

Ball and Jolly will come back into the team does this again re-create the dilema of where do we play Goodes? I think most people would agree that Goodes has played his best footy this year on the Ball and I would like to see him continue in this role.

So where does that leave Ball and Jolly can we afford to have 3 players in the ruck?

Goodes could play as a midfielder/RR and they continue to rotate Ball and Jolly in the ruck?

I would like to see the above set-up as it also gives us some size and presence in the middle, and Goodes has been clearing many of the taps when hes there anyway. I suppose the only question is does this expose us as the opposition may choose to run off him with a gun midfielder but we could get around this by using one of our taggers.

What do you guys think?

Goods interchanges ruck with one of either Ball or Jolly. If Goodes is rucking, one of Ball or Jolly is on the bench and the other in the forward pocket.

Goodes plays in the ruck around 60% of the game and then either spends time on the bench resting or drifts down to the forward line.

Another possible approach is to have the resting non-goodes ruckman go into the backhalf and stand in block up their space, espeically if they have a good leading forward.

The side benefit is that a midfielder has to make way from the bench, so our midfielders get more game time. Personally, I think Roos' super midfield rotation strategy has not been shown to work and I would imagine its not too popular with the players.

Would seem not to matter for this week as it looks like Ball will not play.

However, I would still prefer Goodes in the ruck rather than in the backline. He plays too loose there and his man runs away from him, which can hurt us.

If he is not rucking, he shoudl go forward and let them worry about the match up.

I agree with what others have said - Goodes has seen his best form playing on the ball. Last game was a prime example, he was one of our best. I am inclined to think that when Ball comes back in Goodes will be pushed out of the ruck yet again. I see no problem with having three players in the ruck. Failing this, Ball has gone forward in the past and has been really effective.

That's an interesting rule. Many a high mark is taken on the shoulders of a team mate.

I suspect they differentiate between 'climb' and 'jump'.

But climbing - if you take an implication of using the hands to assist elevation - is illegal whether on a team mate or an opponent. Why make the rule specific to climbing on a team mate?

Unless one argues that you could use your hands to elevate yourself on a team mate because you wouldn't get a free against you for "in the back" against a team mate?

I think the spirit of the law only involves a free kick if the person being climbed on assists.

Probably should be but often isn't paid - otherwise half of Capper's marks would never have been paid!!

Seems like if you hold onto the ball you will more often than not get away with it but if you fail you get pinged.
