You give ONE player a dress-rehearsal? Or better yet you "give" it to him but tell him its not really his, without being open enough to let him know who he has to do better than.

If you haven't got the confidence to give it to him mid-season, this rotation is the next best thing.

For a start, I think it would show decisiveness - which is one important element of leadership - within the club's hierarchy.

I can't see how they can doubt Kirk's ability to be a good captain. But I read the rotation as placing some doubt their belief in him.

Of the rest of the rotatees I reckon only 3 are in with some chance and there are question marks over all three - Hall his discipline, and Goodes and Bolton their consistency. If they want the job they have this year not to demonstrate that Kirk is not a worthy candidate, but that they would be even better.

Do we know if the leadership group was involved in this decision? For all we know it may have been their idea - with Kirk's full support.

I agree that it would be a bad thing for Kirk if he wasn't involved but we aren't really to know what happened behind the scenes (unless it has been made public and I've missed it).

I personally don't like the idea but ultimately it is only a really bad idea if it somehow stops us from achieving our goal - the flag. It's fair to say that we probably can't win it this season so it doesn't bother me too much.

St Kilda seem happy with their system and whilst the jury is still out on how useful it actually is, I don't think it's really caused them any problems. Thomas obviously liked the results of the weekly captaincy rotation (2002?).

It does seem a bit pointless to give it to guys who won't be considered for the captaincy but I guess it may have a positive effect on the way they play - or a negative effect which will tell us something about them.

It really seems to be Roosy's favourites. This is whats causing division.

They should have left Kirk as captain - for stability more than anything.

the scenario is as follwos:-

Kirk - reliable, courageous gives 110% - HE'S THE MAN!

Baz - reliable but gets miffed in contested marks and is likely to
give the umps a gob full if decision goes against him - so he wont have his mind fully on the job if captain being mindful that he has to be courteous etc. would be good deputy though.

Jude - good solid player, a bit too much of a pretty boy and isnt in the same class as Kirk. Perhaps a bit too wet behind the ears.

Goodes - great when hes' on, shocking when he's off and is always looking for MOL to pass the ball too - so I dont think he's the one.

Leo - will be too busy trying to take the spectacular mark, and will order all players to have a bounce of the ball as soon as they get it regardless of the fact that there are 5 opposition players about to pounce on them - its the "have a bounce" clause in his contract. not the way to go.

Matthews - Oh my God - lets not even go there!

Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh - you are going to have 6 styles of captaincy (well with Matthews there would be just mass confusion) that not all of the players will adapt to - so surely just one captain would be preferable to at least have a consistent pattern of leadership.

Oh dear - I do hope that I'm wrong.

We have to trust that the club will pick the right captain and whoever they pick will be a great captain and probably win a Brownlow and will be holding the premiership cup aloft next year after we go through the season undefeated because of the leadership shown by our captain.

It just goes to show what a meaningless position the captaincy is. Aside from the coin toss, what else is there to do. Lead by example - well senior players should be doing that anyway, as with on field motivation and direction. The runners direct the play, bring blokes on and off. It's not as if the captain of an AFL team has to ring around Fri night making sure he has a team, that everyone knows where the ground is, that LRT is aware that it is his turn to get the ice and that the young blokes have remembered that it is an away game so they have to wear their white shorts. That players can pick up the job, do it for 2 weeks, then drop it, shows what a meaningless occupation it is. Either that or the Swans are admitting that they have 6 blokes who are going to lead our side in a half-arsed useless way for the rest of the season.

Dont be ridiculous and incite something that isnt there - from where we sit, we have seen it on a vast number of occassions and he always looks for MOL - when there are clearly others free.
Its an observation thats all.

Really, if we are talking about leadership of the team, isnt the real leader the coach? The coach is like the manager of the team while the captain is onfield to help ensure that the players follow the coaches game plan etc, a bit like a supervisor or deputy really.
