    Goal Accuracy

In case anyone was unsure just how bad our goal kicking has been....check this out (figures include rushed behinds but not OOB or stabs into goal mouth from 30 metres that were marked!!!!) so is a fair indication I reckon.

    1996 - 63.4 %
    1997 - 51.2 %
    1998 - 74.0 %
    1999 - 57.6 %
    2000 - 65.0 %
    2001 - 55.0 %
    2002 - 58.9 %
    2003 - 72.1 %
    2004 - 66.4 %
    2005......................

Ya gotta scroll down for effect

    39.4%

    That's right folks....from 72.1 % to 39.4 % in about 25 games give or take.

Our pathetic scoring efforts have seen us averaging 10.14 for a match score. And this in INCLUDING thrashing Hawthorn.

If I may refer you to an earlier season when we were more accurate. That would be when we managed to average 8.10 per match..... in 1906. Obviously all that professional training can get in the way of kicking the bloody ball, eh!

Over the last 7 weeks our percentage has been...wait for it 34.3 %.

We haven't kicked as poorly as 34.3 % since 1916 when we averaged a woeful 28.1 %......However we did have a few blokes out that year

Our full forward was probably on sabbatical at Gallipolli. We lost that one too.

We have to go right back to 1904 to find a worse year when we scored 30.8 %. It was a non-war year so absolutely no excuses from that bunch. Shocking effort. The whole forward line was probably sold to the Mangatang thirds for 2 Shillings.

Wonder what will happen to the lowly paid lads of 2005?????

In some ways this is a good sign in the sense that there is one obvious area for improvement that will see the team's effectiveness increase without changing anything else. If our recent scorelines were as is this season but at 75% conversion rate, the team would have huge problems.

Of course, the team still has to find a way to improve the accuracy...

And when they do find the goals, who ever they are playing better watchout.

PS. Accuracy is not that important, if you always kick > 6 behinds per opponents goal!!

These numbers don't seem right to me - if we're going on total scores (so including Rushed Behinds) we're around 44.1% this year so far. Last year through the H&A we were 57.1%

        I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you have a look at the AFL ladder, you'll notice a column titled percentage. You wont get much percentage winning games by kicking behinds.

If you keep winning by kicking behinds you don't have to worry about percentage.

If we'd kicked accurately, we might have beaten the Kangaroos but that's about it. Of course, Brisbane could argue that if they had kicked accurately we wouldn't have beaten them.

So, accuracy is a major problem, but it's not our key issue IMO.

When we have 25 or more scoring shots in a game, we have a 9-1 record in the past season and a half (the exception was the Melbourne game this year, which included a very high number of rushed behinds).

When we have less than 25 scoring shots in a game, we have a 9-13 record in the past season and a half.

For those game where we have less than 25 scoring shots and win, in 6 wins we keep the opposition to less than 18 scoring shots, and in the other 3 wins we have a high to very high goal accuracy ratio, or more importantly our goal accuracy differential is over 20% points higher than our opponent's.

I think winning through this method is not sustainable on a regular basis over the long term or in finals.

I think its a bloody good sign that our major problem is goal kicking and we're still winning games. Our midfield has improved a lot over the last few weeks, especially with the continual growth or Ablett and Montys efforts to add to Kirk, Jooba and Willow on return soon. Our backs are as strong as ever now, Leo and Tiger both killed it on the weekend, their back to some form!
All we need to do is convert these chances... We are having an average of 24 shots at goal per game... if we can kick at 65% for the remainder of the season thats around a total of 105, give or take. And once we start getting bigger scores on the board, the board will continue to tick over as it will kill teams off earlier in the game, as we should have vs Essendon.
The key is to keep blokes like Ben Mathews away from the goals...

How is that important??? He has kicked 26.17 in his career. That is not a bad return for a non forward.

The main point with our accuracy is where we are kicking from. How many shots do we take from the edge goal square?? Not many IIRC.

Most shots these days seem to be from 35-40+ out and a lot from the pockets. And once NOG manages to snare a few from outside 50+ he'll be trying more often.

Our so-called best kicks are some of our worst offenders this year:

                          Ablett 3-7
                          J Bolton 2-2
                          Davis 8-9
                          Kennelly 0-2
                          Nicks 0-2
                          O'Keefe 8-8

And of course there are the perennial poor kicks:
                          Buchanan 3-9
                          LRT 0-2

Not to mention lack of shots by many of these, and other, players...

Staggering to think that Jude has only kicked 2 goals - I know he's not a big goal-kicking midfielder but thats an ordinary out put for week 8.

ROK & Davis must also be well down from 2005, as is BBB. This has got to change if 2005 is to have a happy ending.
