    Not another Vogels article!!

Missing the boat not the end of the world
However, Barham said Vogels was one of many players whose progress he followed after the draft. There is a player in Ballarat a year older than Vogels who Barham is still monitoring.

Let's hope it doesn't go to his head, and he improves on last weeks performance.

Although the saints will be taking him a bit more serious than than would've b4 last week.

Other clubs had as many as 20 unlisted players join training before the rookie draft in December so they could assess first-hand the contents of the game's bargain basement. But, because of the cost of travel and accommodation, the Swans had been able to audition only a handful of prospects.

Barham's argument was accepted and last December the Swans hosted a dozen unlisted players.
For a while it has felt like we haven't uncovered as much talent with our recruiting as other clubs and it has mostly been put down to finishing mid-table by those that want us to tank (where are they now? yoo hoo, anne!) but it seems like we haven't actually been working that hard at it compared with other clubs!

I am back - have been in Darwin for a couple of weeks. Wonderful warm weather and a surprisingly large amount of AFL coverage on TV. I only call for tanking when we are losing as it makes losing less painful.

Jees thats a tough call. There is the (by no means) small matter of cost. Flights, accomodation, living expenses, etc for 20 guys for a month or two? In Sydney that could run into the tens of thousands of dollars (that we dont have).

There's a few RWO regulars who would swoon for a chance to billet a young spunk or two. Not sure about the CS though

Other clubs may well audition up to 20 untried players each year but how many of them are ever picked up in the draft, let alone make an impact at senior level? Every so often teams will find a gem but it will probably remain the exception rather than the rule. Carefully targetting those you want to try out must be more important than sheer numbers, and shows how the recruitment game is far more than just following the under-18 competition.
