    recruting

you know if swans hadn't recruited allison we would have a kid with 3 yrs experience

without tingay a kid with 2 yrs exp

without daffy a kid with 1 yr exp

makes you wonder about the wisdom in the past
Coach: "Joe,go out and get ferocious"

    Joe:"Sure coach,what number is he?"

    Not entirely true.

Without Daffy we probably wouldn't have Hall - part of the deal to get the first round pick we needed for him was to agree to take Daffy and his huge fat contract off Richmond.

Without Tingay we might have a kid but who would it be? He was a pre-season selection and one can only think that the Swans didn't think there were any younger players worth picking up at that stage. And even if there were, they could have been slipped onto the rookie list, given the club hasn't taken up its full allocation of rookies in recent years. Plus Tingay has stuck around the club and - from what I've read about his attitude towards conditioning and preparation, quite apart from how good a player he was, that can only be a good thing, can't it?

Similar comments can be made about Allison. OK, so he was taken in the main draft but with a late pick. Are there any players selected after him by other clubs that you think would noticeably strengthen our current list?

As I've just posted elsewhere, I think our biggest recruiting error in recent years has been what we paid for Ball and Williams. I reckon we could have got them a bit cheaper and might have another top quality youngster or two on the list as well.

i don't care what all the reasons where, the point is the club got nothing from them as footballers.a 17yr old can be a 10 yr player, those 3 were only ever 3 yr max.clubs don't usually loose draft picks for a conditioner or a runner.

I doubt that the Pies would have traded Willo for anything but a first round pick. They still rated his ability highly but baulked at his huge salary ask, I am told. But when we offered #8 pick they decided to trade him. We wouldn't have got him for less, and in reality he's been great value. He will past his peak if we ever become a force though.

I agree a first round pick was probably fair for Willo - but we gave up a third round pick as well.

If we did not draft Tingay, Rusell or Allison, we might have drafted some decent midfields instead. We did get Fixter in the pre-season draft. We could have some more.

That is only one part of the whole thing though. More importantly,
if we had not drafted Tingay, Russell or Allison, we would have to open a spot up in the team for younger players. Surely that would help the development for Bolton, Forside, Albett, Fixter, Stevens, etc... Even Forside and Bolton have played a large number of games, I still feel that they are not seasoned AFL players. Goodes is a seasoned player. This is probably because both Bolton and Forside were never given a decent role in the team until recently. Without Russell, Allison and Tingay, it could have been different.

Name me one player drafted after these guys who went to do much???? No one stands out as a hit after these player were picked. The idea we could of had youngesters on this list is flawed because what if instead of picking up the older player we just passed instead? I know that was the plan with Tingay and Allison. If we didn't pick up Russell it would of been Anthony Rock AND Daffy resulted in us getting Hall. So to say we could of had young players instead is flawed because the club was never going to pick a young kid and no good players have become of those pick afterwards.
