Yeah I know, it is a big statement, but the more I watch the more I see.

Kirky is another who is a chance but he is 29 iirc.

Lets start with a young fella who always has a go - might not always be good - but you know he will try his guts out.

I reckon we should stop pissfarting around with the 2 week stuff - didn't seem to help Leo unfotunately.

BTW I admire Kirky, Leo and the rest of the candidates (maybe not Ben) equally.

I am still gobsmacked that Ben Matthews will be captain of the swans. It's an insult to Paul Kelly and it's an insult to plugger that he wears 4.

MOL - has involvement in the aboriginal community in a leadership role. I think.
Crouch - a devout Catholic who admires the Pope and goes to church every Sunday with Taigh.
Schaubes - has received accolades for his community leadership and work and compassion.

This counts them all out because it may put them on an intelligence level way above the rest of the team, that in turn may cause mass confusion.

No I think it was on the money. The three named have outside interests that scream out "leadership quailitys" but because they either were too old or weren't part of the leadership group didn't get a look in, which when you look at Ben Mathews getting a gig as captain at some dreadful point seem the more confusing.

If anything it would demonstrate an inherent tendancy to FOLLOW.

The debate about Captaincy is about who is the best at leading the team during a game of Football.

All issues outside of that are irrelevant.

And the implication that those players who don't pursue charitable work are therefor too stupid to lead is utterly contemptable and an insult to the team.

So then Stuart Maxfield was the wrong choice as captain at the start of the 2003 season because he was selected for what he does "off" the ground and not what he does "on" it. Heck when he stood down a few weeks back he said the reason was because he captaincy was based around him being around the club during the week and with him being in Melbourne most of the week, he lost the major impact factor of his captaincy.

Maxfield is clearly a great on field leader. Anything he does off field is a bonus to his Captaincy.

Someone whose great around the club will never be Captain if that greatness doesn't translate onto the field during a match.

You've missed the point entirely.

A Captain's appointment will be based primarily on his on-field leadership ability.

Any other qualifications will be and MUST be secondary to that.

A point which you clearly have missed because Maxfield himself admitted he got the captaincy for his off field work and not what he did on the field. It was also the reason he stood down, because he could be around the club Monday to Thursday.

That'd be Maxfield's humble opinion. The dude admits he was never a great player.

There's no way he would've been made Captain unless the coaches thought he was the best on-field leader.

Paul Williams was thought to be the better "on field leader" but went we the player they thought had the best all round leadership quality on and off the field. Just have to see what Maxfield did the day after the huge loss to the Western Bulldogs in 2002 when calling the entire team over to his place to "bond" with them and get their focus onto the next weeks match against Essendon at Telstra Stadium in which Essendon were expected to trash us, only for us to loss by 2 points and a Ricky Mott kick at goal.

Sure on field leadership is important, but its not the most important factor when deciding a captain. What they do off the field has just as much impact than on it.
