Rookie list - for those who regularly watch the reserves

Just curious, as we approach the halfway mark, which rookies are on track for a promotion at the end of the year? With the exception of Vogels, I haven't had the luxury of seeing any more than a brief cameo during the Wizard Cup for any of them.

Grundy's probably next in line, leads well and has the body to compete.

Potter's been quite good in the reserves, he isn't afraid to go after the ball in the Jude Bolton style. Probably still too slight to be promoted.

Shaw (along with Ericksen) has been quite dominant in the ruck, but his kicking needs work.

Campbell hasn't had much to do in the games I've seen.

Garrubba has been quiet playing on the wing, and Clarke hasn't really stood out playing up forward.

    Haven't sighted Hayes at all.

In summary, Grundy is the only real chance, and if something disastrous happens with all our ruckmen Shaw would be promoted. The rest of them are midfield/flanker types and Willoughby, Schmidt and Sundqvist would be ahead of them.

Grundy's kicked goals and he's a good size so I guess he might get a chance but really I've watched the rookies since the preseason adn most of them have done well.

Your correct about Potter, he's very willing, but I don't think he'll make it.

Shaw more than Ericksen has been great in the ruck, his tapwork is a major reason the seconds are killing the Canberra teams, he's giving our runners a armchair ride. His kicking and marking do need work.

Campbell not been busy in defence but when in attack his performance, like in the preseason, hasn't excited me at all.

Garrubba looked totally out of his depth in preseason and early on, but he's been improving markedly in the last month.

Ed Clarke's spends a lot of time in the back pocket, and it looks like he finds it very strange down there.

Hayes and Quade are a good size but don't stand out to me.

I agree with pretty much everything Ruckman said.

Love watching Potter play but he's a bit ragged around the edges even at ACTAFL level.

Garruba has been very good in the last few games I've seen. He is very nippy and his skills are neat, though I wonder if he has a true 'weapon' in his arsenal. He is also very slightly built so we won't see him play senior footy this year.

Clarke and Campbell have been the two biggest disappointments in that they were the two probably pegged to be most AFL-ready. Campbell seems to struggle to get involved in the game, while Clarke doesn't look anywhere near fit enough.

Anyone want to give an updated opinion? There's only going to be another four or five games in which to judge.

At this stage of the season it's probably more relevant to ask who will still be on the list next year (whether rookie or senior list).

My views probably haven't changed over the past couple of months (though admittedly I haven't seen quite as much of the reserves playing in recent weeks).

Vogels will be on the list.

Shaw and Grundy are probables to be retained, as much for the type of player they are and the needs of the Swans list as for what they've actually achieved this year (though both have impressed greatly at times).

Garruba must be a possible to get a second rookie year. I think he deserves it.

I wouldn't be overly surprised to see Potter get a third year but it will depend on how many rookie spots they want to leave open for new blood.

The rest I expect will be cut, bearing in mind that most rookie players only get one year to impress.

I retty much agree with Liz, at this stage of the season it's probably more relevant to ask who will still be on our lists next year.
                Good news
Vogels, depending on his next few senior games may find himself promoted permanently to the senior list.
Earl Shaw is definitely one to keep.
Garubba was improving considerably (before he was injured) and is also worth another season.
Grundy started brilliantly but has taperred off a little, he's only 18 I think, so I think we should keep him too.

                Not so Good
                Potter, Cambell, Clarke & Hayes.

So we'll likely have 3 or 4 rookie spots and 3 or 4 senior spots (Maxfied, Nicks, James and probably Sunqvuist too.

                  Sydney Swans Reserves v Ainslie
Is not being played before the Brisbane game at Telstra but at the SCG on Saturday 13 August at 2.30pm.

Entry is free and via Gate A with seating available in the Ladies Stand. I'm thinking of going just to check out the members area.

For those who regularly watch the reserves? That would be the early arriving seat minders in the MA NOBLE.

                        No, not just seat minders.
I can't understood people who don't watch the reserves? Nor can I understand people who arrive at 1/4 time, and the season ticket holder who only goes to a couple of games a year, spends the time networking and barely notices the game is totally beyond my comprehension.

Quade is a top up plyaer, not a rookie.

Not sure if he was old enough for the draft last year (in which case Hayes was preferred) or whether he is very young, in which case he has done well to be mentioned in a few dispatches.

Vogels is a cert to be elevated, boy i like the ilk of this guy.

If Bally retires, expect the BIG EARL to be promoted as we seriously can't rely on Stephen Doyle to be fit for the whole season, otherwise we will draft another ruckman or use Eriksson who is still a year or 2 away.

Grundy will be promoted if we do lose some of the youngins that haven't made it ala Sunny, Powell and possibly Fixter (I hope not though).

I would like to see Clarke retained as he does have more of an upside to his game, as does Garubba.

The rest we should ship out.
