Anti-Swans sentiments in Melbourne last weekend - UGH!
As has already been mentioned, most of the time it's just a light hearted "go <insert team here>" and after the game, if there's been another on in town at the same time, you will often get asked about your team's game. Plus I like the fact people wear their colours every day of the week there - you don't see that nearly as much here with NRL jumpers.
Interesting. I've seen JF allude to this a few times too.
My day-to-day jacket for cold weather is a Swans one, but not Swans colours... would that be seen as out of the ordinary in Sydney? What about a Swans watch and Cheer Cheer as my ring tone? These are nothing out of the ordinary here in Melbourne - and most people would recognise each club's ring tone if they heard it.
We hate Anthony Rocca
We hate Shannon Grant too
We hate scumbag Gaspar
But Leo WE LOVE YOU!

Not many would have it as their day-to-day.
Never really got a close up look at people's watches, but seeing as there are no club songs in League, I can't imagine ring tones being team-related!
I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.
I think that maybe you were just unlucky Tuesday. I have never had a bad experience with other supporters in Melbourne. Actually, on Sat evening in the Melbourne CBD before going onto Telstra Dome I had a number of Collingwood and Hawthorn supporters (they played at the MCG Sat arvo) tell me in one way or another that they hoped that the Swans beat St Kilda.
I love the way Melbourne's CBD fills up with people on their way from or to a footy game on Sat evening and the general buzz that it creates, dressed in their teams colours. There's nothing like that in Sydney.

I don't eat animals since discovering this ability. I used to. But one day the lamb I was eating came through to me and ever since then I haven't been able to eat meat.
I've experienced what Tuesday is talking about - I must have been about 10, a Tigers supporter was laughing when I put on my swans scarf...Bloody Uncle's

Originally posted by Tuesday I flew down for the game on the weekend - my first ever interstate viewing. I was so excited and thought nothing could dampen my spirits but I have never in my whole life encountered the degree of general hostility and animosity directed towards Swans supporters down there! I was amazed! We were harassed all day and were only in our scarves!
Ha ha its funny isnt it this is the part I really miss after moving from Adelaide to Sydney, the general banter every day - the passion people talk about their respective teams on a daily basis.
Its not the same here at work the guys mainly chat about a great new latte or a Thai resturant thats opened next to the 76 other Thai resturant in the same street or at a stretch rah rah or that other game come up.
Its the great thing about travelling to Melb - for the banter & abuse, obviously if your a Swans supporter its not to watch the footy.

Seriously, they really need to get over themselves and get a life and realise the VFL is now a second teir competition
What happens when say Collingwood or Essendon are having a bad run is the supporters just don't wear the colours. That way they can't cop the flak from other supporters. Except Collingwood supporters are always a dead giveaway, namely the lack of front teeth and the pronunciation of with as wiff.
Back in the late 90's when the Dons were going ordinary. not any red and black gear was to be seen. Win a few and out it came.

Really? So all that red and white down Oxford St after a game is a co-incidence?
Obviously the numbers will be less but when you consider 15K is a big crowd for the League we are doing alright for Sydney-siders.

I have cheer cheer as my ringtone, and I'm searching desperately for a swans phone cover. I wear Swans stuff around the place when I get the rare chance (damn having to dress like a bloody professional these days!), but I can't wear the watch since I'm allergic to the plastic wristband.
I see few people around uni with Swans gear on, usually a cap or polo tee or something.
One thing I must say I love is going down to footy training with the uni team and seeing so many guys in so many different club colours but all getting along and all able to partake in decent conversations about the footy - you NEVER get that anywhere else in sydney except with your footy mates, or at a match.

I'm not bagging Sydney (heaven forbid, I love this place). Of course there's a lot of red and white heading to and from the SCG, but its quickly gone. Have you been to Melbourne during footy season and been in the Melbourne CBD on a Saturday evening? If not, then you wont know what I'm talking about until you do.

Maybe it's because red and white are the new black...
