Hysteria on a lost season.

Everyone seems to be jumping up and down about this season and how the roos is a flop etc. (in general) how a Sydney team that fails will keill the market here, we need priority picks, and we have a crap list etc.

Sydney are 1 game off second place.

Have had their best midfielder out for the main crux.

Had 4 debutants who have all shown something. (when was the last time sydney have played 4 new boys?)

People may critisize the stlye of play, but everyone has a hard on for a team like St. Kilda (and I love watching them play) yet Sydney sit a game clear of them (or at least level)

I have been taken at times with the lost season theory, but with some of the teams above Sydney (adelaide, Geelong, Richmond, Kangaroos) all showing at times that they are no where near contenders, it has made me realise that we really do have a shot at going a long way this year.

My point was, everyone (re: fans, media, people who don't even follow AFL) is adament that the swans are crap this year and that is that. The reality is we have been playing very ordinary yet sit 1 game from second.I'm not saying we are a lock for the flag by any means but You would think the swans where heading towards (real) priority picks if you believed what you read.

The one constant in this season of upsets (as of round 10, only 48 of 80 favourites have won) is the Swans beating lower teams and losing to higher teams.

Can we change this? There is a 5-week stretch from round 14 in which the Swans play Richmond (A), Geelong (H), Melbourne (A), West Coast (H) and Adelaide (A). Our season will be defined here. If we can win the majority of these games we would be doing very well.

A bit of hyperbole - not everyone has said that. Many people have said they are playing ugly football, they are playing beneath their talent and they won't win premierships like that.

The reality is we have been playing very ordinary yet sit 1 game from second.

Possibly two after tomorrow.

Anyway, as SXP said, we have enough beaten sides outside the 8 so it is hardly surprising we are thereabouts. Depending on the draw you could potentially win 11-13 games during the season and think you are okay, but not beat anyone in the eight, which will probably show up at finals time.

I'm not saying we are a lock for the flag by any means but You would think the swans where heading towards (real) priority picks if you believed what you read.

I still don't think that is what has been said.

footy's a funny game and theres half a season to be played yet
we havent played at our best and we're 6-5.

all we need to do is click come finals time and we'll romp home with the flag

Too true. Which makes it really frustrating (and interesting) if you believe as I do that we should have beaten both the Kangas and Adelaide. These are losses that really irritate me, not things like losing to the Eagles at Subiaco.

For many years people have complained that the Swans were too unpredictable -- we'd win the games we're expected to lose, and vice-versa.

Now we actually do go down to the good teams, but beat the crap ones, on a consistent basis. But people still manage to complain about it To me, there's nothing more frustrating that losing the 'unloseable' game.

In a way we've actually progressed this season by removing some of the 'flakiness' of our performances. Maybe this means we're establishing a level that we won't dip below.

Hopefully -- if our skills and accuracy improve, and with a bit of luck with injuries -- we can build on this platform and begin a steady climb, instead of the roller-coaster ride that we've all been used to.

Thats all well and good, but the fact is that we have seen this kind of thing from the Swans for years.
They live off the good will of their fans by doing what appears to be the impossible (make the 8 with a crappy list, invent the most boring style of play ever), yet at the end of the year they have not made it and they never really and truly looked much more like anything other than pretenders with the potential to maybe.. one day soon... who knows...?

Everybody faces facts for about 2 weeks, then we watch the Granny- then think about the cricket, by January every body is back on RWO with their Good Will Guns, loaded and ready to be fired with forgiveness and hope for the same old Swans who do the same old thing year in year out. ad infinitum

They look like a very promising team, but not like a Champion team, not really like a team that you could bet the house on !

Thats what I want, a team you really think looks like u could go out put the house right there on! All of it right down on the nose to win the premiership cup.... not soon not some day soon, not maybe one of these years, but this year!!!!

I want a team that is rated, and who lives up to their reputation. I want a team who really look like they can give the comp a shake.

That aint the Swanies this year my friend.

I reluctantly agree that they could still make the finals (though I think they will finish just out side of the 8), but lets be honest they still look like a very ugly outside chance long shot, don't you agree?

I dont think the issue from RWO'ers has been that a) they were ugly, or b) they were going to finish last. The debate was whether the current style of play could ever win a flag given our list. TO suggest that beating side on the bottom of the table by a mere 20 points should alleviate everyones concerns is, well, silly!
Football isnt about winning games, its about winning premierships. Winning one game does not indicate everything is peachy keen, and although i was estatic to see them win yesterday, I'll be happier when we manage to beat a more worthy opponent that is a contender this year.
Fremantle will not give a good indication, they are extrmemly unpredictable; i think the Collingwood game will be a real test for us, make or break time.

After watching the past 2 games live my best summary is:

We probably played as well this week as we did last week, but we played the worst side in the comp this week.

Less pressure less mistakes, but the clanger count was still pretty high. We made some horrible mistakes and poor disposal decisions under no pressure.

You miss the fact that this week we were accurate. No one to blame for that but ourselves.

If the first four shots of goal we had against St Kilda had been goals, I guarantee the game would have panned out differently. Even if we had lost, it would have looked a very different game.
