You don't normally get to see a player trialled as captain b4 being made captain, so that becomes irrelevant. I have always thought Jude would be captain one day.

Was P Kelly an elite player when he was given the captaincy. How many captains have been given the captaincy that aren't an elite player, when given the job. Must be quite a few I'd suspect.

Who are your current "elite" players in the Swans FH? [/B]
Elite players should be able to lead the team from the front and turn a game from their own boot.
Like great warriors of the battlefield, they have more effect on the outcome of our brand of warfare than many understand.

      Swans elite players:

      Hall
      Mickey O
      Goodes (was one year)
      Leo Barry
      Williams

      Kirk (almost)

I picked Bazza when maxi gave it away and i will stick by this decision.
However i am very interested on how Jude and Goodes go especially Goodes.

I'm looking forward to Goodes having his turn at the helm. Over the last few years he appears to have developed a strong sense of leadership, speaks well publicly and has developed a more aggressive manner on field when the moment has called for it. At the moment I think it looks like a choice between Goodes and Hall for captain, although I'll wait til I see how all players perform in the role before 'casting my vote'.

I am willing to bet fair cash that we won't have a captain announced for 2006 till late Feb 2006.

After the six players have had their turn, I think we, the supporters, should get to pick our top 3 or 4 via an 'Idol' style SMS vote. The results could be announced as pre-match entertainment before one game. Then they all get one more game and we get to progressively vote them off.

To add some spice, maybe a couple of new candidates ('intruders') could be introduced at the second stage - ie a couple of 'improvers' not originally in the leadership group but who have made rapid progress this year. Ablett might be one. Maybe LRT the other?

And to top it off, we could ask SSI to administer and audit the whole process.

(Sorry - couldn't resist that last bit!)

I heard Hall interviewed on the radio last night and he sounds like he really wants the job.

I like the idea of this already. They could also do an in-game promotion where the supporters get to SMS the name of the player they would most like to see benched-the person with the most votes ends up being "evicted" from the following weeks game.

                              Barry? Jude? Brett?

I've always liked Kirk for his attitude. I didn't rate Hall as captain material - until I went to Melbourne for the Carlton game. Bazza had a presence I've never noticed from him before. It's not just about elite players or leading by example (and the Swans have a history of gritty midfielder captains) but what the captaincy can do for a player. And it could do more for Big Bad Bazz than any other guy on the list.

I noticed it most after the death of Wally Jackson. He opened up his house to the entire team that night, and I think it shows his depth of committment to a team that has given him a second chance. This opportunity to Captain (even if it only lasts for a few weeks) is probably the cherry-on-top for a person who has been the victim of circumstance for much of his life.

Having said all of that, Kirk and Goodes have similar hard-luck stories (Kirky's dad lost his arm in a factory accident and Goodes mum was part of the stolen generation). At least our captain will have a real-life personality, without the need for Eddie to generate one via TFS
