    Maxy - the big 3 0 0

11 to go, two weeks away from playing, 10 regular games left (assuming he's back for the mid-season break).

The maths are getting tight. Can't imagine he'll be playing in 2006.

Will he be 'managed' to the magical figure? Should he be? Would he want the 'pity' (think Foulds, Newman, Breen, all massaged to 300 by starting on the bench)? What about team balance? Do we drop a young'n who's travelling well?

Should his 300th be the last Sat in Sept when he's holding aloft the golden cup?

I thought 300 was the number for life membership?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

It is, but to qualify for life membership things like Preseason cup matches, state of origin and (i think) international rules are also counted - the 300 AFL games is a milestone just for senior premiership matches but not much else. Iirc Tony Lockett qualified for his life membership but only played 286(?) senior premiership matches.

Don't see Stu getting there this year, and IMHO it would be a bit on the selfish side for him to play on next year if his form of this year doesn't improve markedly.

              I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

If he's two weeks from playing then does that mean he could be back for the Pies game at Stadium Oz (second week of the split round)??
Starting with Freo this Sunday there are 11 home and away games left...and then finals...if you keep winning you've got to play at least 3 but could be 4. If you lose could be 1 or 2. I guess worst case is at least one final....means that starting with the pies game he could be playing number 300 in the first week of finals...if he recovers....if he walks straight back in.
Would be a fitting way to go for a bloke who has given great service to the club.

                  I'd like to see that.

To be honest, I'd only like to see Maxfield play again if he's in our best 22 that day. The facts are they when your body cant take it anymore, you give it away. Whether thats 289 games of 300.
If we dont make the finals, and round 22 has no effect, then we can give him on last run out.

Automatic life memberships is for 300 games player/coach but like any organisation the AFL can award a life membership to whoever they wish.

Maxfield brought up his 300th official match last year, so he definitely has AFL life membership. The commentators spent all game calling it his '300th' match... was driving me insane because 'official' matches and real matches are two somewhat different things.

It would be a little sad if his last game was a loss in a final. Paul Roos ended his career that way. There's only three ways of ending one's career in a final - playing in a losing final, winning the premiership, or being injured.

I didn't think of that because it's unthinkable to drop a champion.
