Schauble

I wrote this in another thread, but thought it maybe deserved some discussion on its own. What to do with the grey man?

Really got to wonder where Schauble is at. Has been in and out of the team the last few weeks supposedly due to a 'horses-for-courses' selection policy. Last week he had a shocker against Whitnall.

If Whitnall is the sort of guy Shauble is in the team for coz he's slow, then how many other forwards in the rest of the competition is Schauble going to be required to play on? I can't see an obvious opponent for him this week.

And if he is continually put in and out of the side, how can he be expected to get any decent game fitness so that he's going to be ready to go when he is required for a decent defensive job?

This is a sorry state of affairs for a one time club champion and the backbone of our defense over the last 2 years.

I can't speak highly enough of Schauble but my opinion gets clouded by intangibles such as the effect he has on the psyche of the backline and the natural leadership he oozes.........and THAT MARK! What a screamer!!!!!

Yep you can't go past having a group of big strong fellas in the spine (Although if the AFL contues it's policies of turning the game into hocky that may change), makes the midgets walk taller and helps extend the careers of the runners.

Whitnall had a great game last week & is still a fair player so perhaps too harsh to consign Schaubs to the dumpster on that basis of last week alone.

But you make a fair point that he's starting to look like the game has passed him by. The rise and rise of the small forward (a la Williams & N.Brown) may be his death knell.

Small forwards come and go, and we are one team that can handle small forwards very well.

But Schuable has a key role in our defense. I can only assume he's not 100% fit to be half the player he was last year.

We need him. We needed him against the Saints. Quality player.

That has certainly been the case before, too much time as the primary focus of opposition defenders tends to . . .
a) shorten their careers and
b) makes it very hard for them to produce consistently (even within the 1 year).

I suspect Williams may fade when the grounds get heavier.

I note that tonight to half time Whitnall has 13 possessions, 6 marks and 4 goals 1 behind. A great effort and showing that he's in top form. So, as I said the other day, I wouldn't write off Schauble after that one game.

On Schaubs big Lance had 9 possessions, 7 marks and 2 goals to half time. I sat down and watched the Blues vs. Swans game again after hearing the news that Schaubs was dropped, Andrew did some pretty good things in that game (a lot of the team play, 1 %ers too that our backline needs more of too) and considering how many times they tried to go to Lance the stats aren't that shameful.
One thing I like about basketball stats is that if someone scores 30 points you can instantly see from their Field Goal percentage if they scored 30 because they were hot or scored 30 because the team went to them every time down court. I'd love to have something similar maintained for key forwards (particuarly someone playing at CHF) so you can see if they took 10 marks because they were on song or took 10 marks because the midfield looked for them every single time they went forward (so took 10 of 20 opportunities)- you can approximate it I guess but as far as I know there is not a stat maintained for it. I realize it might not be an overly fair stat for the Forward as delivery/decision making in the midfield may be poor. That said, Lance is in pretty good form at the moment.


I am not happy with Roos and his teatment/use of Schauble this year.

There is a stat for that - Pro Stats used to publish it a few years ago, but unfortunately they publish less stats than previously. They would specify who the forward target was for each of the I50s (if there was a target).

Whitnall had 19 disposals, 10 marks and kicked 4.2 last night.
Against the Swans, 19 disposals, 12 marks and kicked 5.2.

No one thinks Leppitsch and Michael are finished, so I think Schauble should still be given more chances.

I just don't get how Schaubs seemed to go out of favour with Roos so quickly. He wasn't even playing that badly. One week he was a certain selection and the next he was dumped. I think there's perhaps more to this than meets the eye. Perhaps he's carrying an injury of some sort. How can it be so apparent to all of us that Schaubs is a champ and not to the man who matters most?
