A article from the Daily Telegraph today saying that former Rugby League referee Bill Harrigan has told the AFL he could solve the problem of umpires being abused.
The article goes on to say a "umpires source" has said Barry Hall (& Jeff Farmer), the most difficult to deal with and as a group Sydney (&Geelong) players are "constant whingers"

It does seem like every time the ball goes to Bazza and he doesn't get a mark he throws his arms out.
May be he is appealing to his team mates for better delivery?

You can imagine Hall being intimidating and Farmer's got that evil glint in his eye. But, Hally rarely gets a free kick so you can understand him voicing his frustration.
As for the Swans, well, if you're on the wrong side of the penalty count continously your voice in going to be ingrained in the Umps memory....

With Bazza I believe it is a definate instruction from the coaching staff for him to make sure that the umpire see the infringements, so he does remonstrate with the umpires regarding frees.

Unfortunatelty this is needed becuase the umpires seem to think that as a big strong man normal rules regarding scragging, rough play don't apply to him when he has the ball.

I also think that he uses it as a way to let off steam rather than building it up and and taking it out on an opponent in a physical way. That only gets him into trouble.


As for the team as a whole, you only have to look at the free kick counts in the last couple of weeks to see their frustration.

Billy's comments just go to prove that whether you call them referees or umpires they still frequently behave like total dicks.

The umpires coach was forced to admit after the 2 previous seasons that they stiff Barry Hall, and what's the umpires response? An increase in free Kicks to Barry? No the brand him a whinger!

The same with the Swans in general, we're almost always on the wrong end of the free count yet we're the whingers? If we're so dirty how come we've only had 1 suspension in the last 3 years?

The umpires decision making is as bad as their bouncing (has anyone seen a bounce even look like it would land withing the 10 metre circle lately?

Bouncing has been appalling this year. Must be hell being a ruckman (as opposed to the Ruckman). Too often it gives an outrageous advantage to one or another team too.

Which shows that umpires are clearly unable to be unbiased. Considering that this is a professional sport then that's disgraceful.

The only thing that should influence an umpire is whether or not they see a free kick.

BTW, the only reason that we would whinge more than anyone else is because we don't get the free kicks that are paid to the opposition - wouldn't have heard to many complaints from Geelong on the weekend.

Unbiased my butt. Even Derek H-S said last night that there is no emotion in umpiring and they dont try even up the game with extra frees.

Yet they have an opinion on "whingers" and who is the "most difficult" player to deal with??

Yep, especially when there is a backman taking the ball out of defence.

What came first, the bad umpiring decisions towards Barry Hall, or the constant appealing for them, and abuse and trades when things don't go his way as well. Kind of a chicken and egg scenario I think.

The only way this cycle can be broken is for Barry to

A) play the man fairly
B) forget the decision and chase his opponent when possession in the forward line has been lost
C) stop screaming and swearing incessantly at umpires after the decision has been made.

I see him every week from close range. This is one aspect of his game that drives me mental. As it is very very curable! But only he can cure it too.

I think it is straightforward.

No Swans player can do wrong, to any degree, when it comes to treatment of umpires, off field antics, or hairstyles.

All umpires, referees and other officials (except, of course RWO/BF moderators) are ignorant, cheating a********.
