    Season defining game

Feel free to disagree with me but IMO I feel that this Saturday night's game against Melbourne will really shape where we are headed this season.

If we win, I think top 4, maybe top 2 is an extremely good chance, however we lose then perhaps 7th or 8th or even out of the 8 with Port and St Kilda coming up the ladder and our tricky draw ahead.

Melbourne are one place above us (thus the traditional 8 point game) but the mental affects of defeating Melbourne in Melbourne and another top 4 contender will do wonders for our mental state (it will for mine anyway!), however lose, against a team in not top form, and another loss in Melbourne with games V WC and Adelaide following it could turn our season very flat, very fast.

    What are your thoughts?

    Cheers,
    Matt

Thankfully our destiny is in our own hands from now on till the end of September. If we win we grin, if we lose we have noone else to blame.

I guess I mean we have been in a smiliar position in previous seasons and lost these types of games and well finish in our customary 5-8th position, not really doing much.

Melbourne has not been in great form and for our own confidence we need to beat them. You see, if we lose to Adelaide in Adelaide no one will think much of it but I really feel this game is very significant!!

Fair points. I just think that if we get carried away with one game being more important than the other, we will fall into last years trap. Losing easy games usually went hand in hand with winning the hard ones. I think its because we over-hype the hard ones and the easy ones therefore become under-hyped.

My preference is that we treat every game as a must win from here on in, and not use up too much emotional ammunition along the way.

Yes, I agree Schneiderman: every game is equally important. That said, there has to be emphasis on stringing wins together against top sides. Our downfall in the past has been inconsistent performances in consecutive matches against high quality opponents. And, as you alluded to, the fact that we cann win in spectacular style against a good opponent and then lose badly against sides we are expected to beat. A great win against a good side - like the one last week- is fantastic, but needs to be backed up by a win the following week. I feel this is especially important leading up to the finals. If we can't do that we will only ever be pretenders.

With both the Cats and the Aints having big wins today it just got more season defining IMO.

Agree - part way through the round St Kilda are in 4th - 9 wins but far superior percentage. If we win tonight we pull a game clear again and unless the Roos pants the Hawks, we move into the top 4. VERY important game as far as ladder positioning goes.

At least we have control of our own destiny. I'm kind of glad we have a tough draw into the finals - we will have a very good idea of where we stand over the next 3 weeks because of who we have to play.

Outstanding win by the lads and happy to say a 4 quarter effort!
Barely a bad player in sight last night.

Thought C.Bolton's job on Roberston was supurb, O'Keefe, Goodes, Hall, Ball were all outstanding.

Very proud of the team...bring on the Weagles!
