You guys looked and sounded fantastic last night. The area behind the goals at the Coventry end was a sea of red and white. All those flags flying looked spectacular on TV. After Sydney kicked its first goal (I think) of the last quarter the TV cameras were on you and JF and two others were standing up leading a chant and it almost led me to join you from my lounge room. You did yourselves proud. Well done.

What more can you say besides the Melbourne CS were dead.Vicky Pollard: Oh my god I so can't believe you just said that this is like the time I threw Anita's nokia in the canal as a joke and she's like you have well got to buy me another one and I'm like get over it and then Paul came over who's adopted anyway and started saying that I fancy Mark Bennett but oh my god just because I have sex with someone doesn't mean I fancy them. -
Did that spectator deliberatley throw the footy at the CS from the stand above. Was either the first or 3rd Q. Looked a fairly hard throw straight down to me.
By the way he took a very good mark.Comment

Helped last night that we made such a good start so the Swans supporters in the crowd were in full voice early compared to the Dees.
Sat in the bay next to the cheer squad and they did a fantastic job of creating an atmosphere for the boys to play in.
Reckon of the 28,500 at the game, 11,000 to 12,000 of those would have been Swans supporters.
Just goes to show what type of support the team can generate in Melbourne, Kanga's v Hawthorn today only got 24,000!!!!!

You know each club's supporters have a particular profile.
While waiting for P46 and his push I did a bit of people watching. The Dees (always amuses me that nickname) supporters were all well groomed and well dressed. You could say smooth and perhaps affluent looking.
Their children were the obedient type trotting purposely beside mum and dad like a well trained labrador. The kids were well dressed and clearly from the Balwyn/Camberwell area.
When the Dees supporters ring in they are usually from these suburbs. For those interstaters these are a couple of the suburbs
of the well heeled.
As for us Swans, well we are part of Rooseys blue collar types with a smattering of more intelligent types like myself. A bit of a mixed bag with no shortage of rough heads in the CS. But that is standard for a CS. Mind you I am looking from afar with binos.
The more mature ladies like "all the boys", except one last night said she was off LRT. She couldn't even bring herself to bag BM when he continually held on to the footy.
What I notice about us Swans supporters in Melbourne is the high numbers of young people following us.
Dees supporter profile has never changed (generational through affluence and original MCC membership) and neither has the Melbourne South supporter.Comment

My son is 13, he is a Carlton Supporter but a Swans Cheer Squad Member, his voice has just broke as well, I could have sworn I was sitting next to a died in the wool Swannies supporter last night. He was animated and his voice was certainly in the Cheer Squad Pack.
I thought being at the game we did a good job, but when I saw the replay I saw how good we were.Comment

We created an incredible atmosphere despite some rather difficult obstacles. Peter was as crook as and could only emit little more than a croak that would get out attention. Hence Benny_W, Simon from Tassie,WesternSwan from Perth(!) the "Smurf" (the artist formerly known as "Boofhead"), Ert and Robbie (his fragile health notwithstanding) had to take control of things ourselves.
I was just buzzing with adrenalin at the end of the match. People were not only chanting the normal boring old stuff but were joining in the "Ole Ole Ole Ole Syd-neeh Syd-neeh" and "Stand up if you love the Swans!" (Beaussie's favourite chant, I know.) We had virtually the WHOLE bay standing up and clapping or banging their flag sticks into the floor with us; just an undescribable feeling.
We all thought the seats behind us were going to be empty. But then this group of about 100 teenagers (with assorted grown-ups in tow) all rocked up. Much to our joy they were a choir from the Central Coast and were all elated to not only be there supporting the Swans but being where the action was. Some were yelling out things like "Come on Barry/Goodesy etc!", but many had not watched AFL live before. And to see them not only getting into but starting some chants themselves by the last quarter was just awesome. It really warms the heart.
Perhaps people south of the border probably don't understand this, but you cannot explain the joy to see people be introduced to our game and just love it straight away. Even the mothers and instructors were standing up and joining in the chants. The whole group of them turned around to taunt some Demons fans with "Scoreboard" in the last quarter. Said Demons fans were shocked to have a whole bay of people giving it to them and scurried away as quickly as they could.
I was pleading the case that it would be in their best interests to all come as a group to the big Eagles match on Sunday. Hopefully the seed has been set in the minds of some of them to come to games up here and support the team as they did last night.
Why is the footy so different in Melbourne? People just have so much more enthusiasm about everything down there. There is a whole bunch of new kids who have joined the Melbourne-based Cheer Squad. They see Pete and myself as heros it seems, and are so infectiously enthusiastic about getting behind the team that I think it rubs off on everyone else. I have given up trying to beat my head against a wall trying to improve things up here. But to just see and experience some much positivity around the place when away from home, whilst in Sydney things are generally to at breaking point stress-wise, is just mystifying. I just wish I could bottle some of the passion we had last night and instill it in some of the types who leer at us at home games when we are endeavouring to give the team some support. But as we know, you can't force people to do what they don't want to do........
It seriously cannot get much better against Essendon. But with the possibility of away finals looming we know that support-wise things will be in the best of hands.

PS:- To those of you heading to Adelaide, please ensure you get your tickets by 10am tomorrow from either the Sydney or Melbourne-offices. I'll be calling Melbourne as soon as they open.Last edited by JF_Bay22_SCG; 17 July 2005, 11:57 PM."Never ever ever state that Sydney is gone. They are like cockroaches in the aftermath of a nuclear war"
