I hate it when comments like this appear on RWO. Remember the one from last year.

The Swans are called such NOT because of the aforementioned-birds used to live around the Albert Park Lake but because of the amount of West Australians they recruited in the 1930s. The nickname ended up sticking with the team. The strength of AFL football is the intense bond between the barrackers and players. And its intense protection of club histories, guernseys and club songs. Our history stretches back to 1874. And needs to be protected at all costs.

I liken the above comments those those of Americans saying what needs to be done to improve 'saahccer'. People who have only started watching the sport, then telling everyone how to change it to suit their own simplistic means. Interestingly I tell Americans I follow a team called 'the Swans' and they all make the same ignorant comment, deeming such a title to be somewhat unmasculine, unaggressive etc etc

I then have to explain to them that the name "Swans" is part of the rich history of our football club. That is is not to be mauled or gnarled on the whim of some well-thinking but highly nieve marketing guru. (Our club has had enough abominous club songs in its tenure in Sydney already ) We are NOT a Murdoch-funded constructed rugby franchise started from scratch that needs a name to be found for itself. (Coastal Sharks, Golden Cats et all)

As opposed to renaming our club "the Sydney Thrashers" or whatever, they had to be explained that we are not a created franchise like the NFL/NHL sides with wanky names like that, but a club that has been in existance since 1874 that is rightly protective of its past in two cities, and is rightfully making steps to right the wrongs of forgetting our Melbourne history since moving up to Sydney.

We already have wanky Americanised names for some of our clubs as it is these days. 'West Coast Eagles' may as well be a Californian womens basketball team. And calling a team the 'Power', good grief!

The Swans are the Swans because that is the name they had when they were sent up here. Our club only started to develop when it didn't have people trying to change and 're-invent' things.

As it is now, Sydney's support in Sydney is largely middle class and I see no reason to alienate the people who have supported Sydney SWANS for almost 25 years.
              I Agree.

This is also why I think Sydney needs a second team.

The Swans as they now stand are unable to present an appealing product to the untapped potential Aussie rules supporters of the western suberbs. Yet they are doing a fine job in the north and especially in the east.

Bring on the second sydney team. ASAP.

Don't start all that again pleeeease!

Don't you know by now I go for Footy first, Swans second (cos at the moment they represent the best penetration AFL has into Australia's biggest market), The Saints and then the Lions.

That order does change occassionally, but footy is always first.

I don't want to say too much about the Swans cos I might hex them.

If they get more than 2 weeks into the finals, I will eat all my words re Paul Roos.

I still think Brisabane are the best chance to make sure those pigs from the west don't get their glory on the last day of sept.

Teams I hate: West Coast (recently), Port, Magpies, North (for their lame attempt at penetrating the Sydney market and 96 and Carey and shannon grant), Adelaide (though the more I grow to hate port the more I have in common with the Crows supporters. Weird thing footy, eh?)

                      Go Swans

I don't mind the Swan name, and I've known the reasons for why they are called the Swans for ages, just prefer Bloods for its psychological benefit I guess.

Convictcreations.com tries to link the performance of South Melbourne in its entire history to its name at the time, which is complete rubbish, even tho the name change was in the middle of South Melbournes height in the early/mid 1930's.

Port definately should have been called the Sharks, at least its something Australian. And yeah West Coast should have just been Perth.

Whats with the crazy suggestions I should support another team, just cause I like "Bloods" more than "Swans" as a name. I only came here to get away from the ignorant, reactionary drivel on bigfooty where one personal opinion or comment it recieved as an insult. Just wanted to see what people think, not stir @@@@ up.

Anyway history is pivotal in a teams future, but I wonder what success Hawthorn would have had if they stayed as the 'Hawthorn Mayflowers'.
That's the problem with modern day medicine - there's no more natural selection of the species.
No wonder there's so many Collingwood fans.

if you make contoversial suggestions Noodle you gotta expect a reaction from people.

Re West Coast, I like the name. I figure it was chosen because they are a team that represents more than just Perth, rather all of WA (or so they liked to think at the time). They have a strong following all over the state.

I still barrack for the BLOODS. Probably the only voice in
                                the O'Reilly stand who does.

CARN THE BLOODS sounds more menacing.
