Cometh the hour, cometh the team

Over the years, theses are the types of matches the Swans have done well in. Such as against Port in the 2003 QF and against St Kilda last year.

Playing the number one team in the country the lads should be fired up.

This is a genuine blockbuster which needs no marketing gimicks
or McDonalds tickets giveaways. Come a perfect winter Sunday afternoon and I expect the SCG to be packed and awash with red.

After being knocked from pillar to post in the early part of the season, the side has a chance to set the record straight.

A win here would consolidate our spot in the top four and more importantly give us confidence for nexts week even more critical game against the Crows.

What I also like about this game is that it is at the SCG where we have a real and pronounced home ground advantage. The Eagles dont have a good record here but that won't mean anything come Sunday.

I expect Jude in particular to have a big game on Sunday. Don't be surpised if Magic continues his torment of the Eagles. If I remember, he kicked the winning goal against them at the SCG in 1999.

The Swans will have to win 18 match-ups if they want to win. They need to contain the explosive Judd and not let the Eagles flex their muscle.

It's a tough ask. Every other side bar Collingwood has failed to clip the Eagles' wings but if there is one team who can do it, its the Swans.

Huh? I remember Plugger needing 6 for the record, he kicked 3 and this was the last time the Eagles won in Sydney.....?

Anyway, yeah Sydney is able to stand up to the big teams, especially when written off.

It will be interesting to see next weeks game too, but another big test is against Essendon in Melb, as Sydney hasn't beaten them in Melb since 1985 I think. But with Essendons form, shouldn't be too hard.

That's the problem with modern day medicine - there's no more natural selection of the species.
No wonder there's so many Collingwood fans.

Hope so - he's been crap in my FF team thus far!

        Not '99 - we lost.
        Possibly '98.

He killed them with 6 goals in 2003, but nothing particularly special otherwise that I recall.

I just have this feeling about this weekend, keep getting revved up when I think about the game.

I expect Willo to be back to his best this weekend, running our midfield and providing quality to the foreward line. He is due for a ball tearer and I am hoping he turns on this week. I will never get tired of watching this CHAMP blow a game open. I also hope Goodes keeps his form, love watching him take all the time in the world in tight situations to make the unbeliavable happen. And Rhino - you go hard son!!!

Earlier in the week I was quietly confident - not necessarily that we'll win but certainly that we're in with a good chance and that, either way, it will be a good, tight contest.

Peversely, now that many in the media seem to be tipping us, based on the Lions comedown / flu recovery / SCG factors, I'm getting worried that our boys are going to be reminded of the gulf between the Eagles and every other team in the comp.

They have probably been stung in the past with games like this

Yeah, I reckon '98 too. I seem to recall sitting in general admission on a Sunday arvo, and I had a GA membership in 1998. Scores were level, and magic snapped a goal with a minute to go, if I recall correctly...

It's definitely not 1997. That was my first year attending games so I remember a lot of them very clearly. In 1997's match against WCE at the SCG, it was a Saturday night, I sat in the Walters stand, and Stefan Carey kicked about 5 goals. This was back when he had hair too.

1999 was Plugger's attempt at the record, which we lost.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

The most memorable would have to be 1996, in the last H&A round. It was about -5 degrees, most of Sydney was under water, one of the light towers was out and there was an Antarctic gale blowing all night.
The Swans swam with the tide in the first term, but it was all level at half-time as the pneumonia kicked in. Swans led by 3 goals at the last change, and I didn't think that would be enough. In a desperate attempt to keep warm, the crowd gave the long "Syyyyydddneeeeeeeeeeey" chant its first performance as we waited for the Eagles charge. It never came, and the Swans kicked a couple against the gale in time-on to win the minor premiership.
                    A night I'll never forget.

I remember sitting up the back of the O'Reilly that night. Dry, but freezing cold, having played soccer in the awful conditions earlier that afternoon. It really was a special night, and while we were tempted to invade the field after the final siren along with so many thousands, we decided against it, instead just getting soaked on the way back to the car.

                      I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.
