    Hallcentric

A most annoying aspect of today's game against WCE was seemingly the option to go to Hall at almost every opportunity. Naturally he was the one who was going to get the most attention from the WCE coaches. I don't like to criticise Paul Roos but I hope this isn't his standard "game plan". Hall did nothing in the first half especially and is hopeless when the ball hits the ground a la his two dropping the balls.

I was screaming at the TV - "Go to Davis" as an alternative option. Yes he didn't do much either but that was largely because he was ignored a lot of the time when they went forward.

Remember the 96 Grand Final when Troy Luff was the counter-foil to Lockett and he surprised the opposition by kicking several early goals?

Roos needs to come up with surprsise like that especially on these super important games.

I think it's been like that for most of the season. But other teams get too conscious of their gun forwards as well. Today Freo went to Pavlich too much on occasions, especially when he was clearly swamped.

It was working well until Archer shut down Luff. Then we had only one avenue to goal again.

I agree with Nolie that we need to work harder to find other options, particularly as Hall is not the type of player like Carey or Pavlich who can often outmark opponents overhead. His forte is the strong lead and using his body.

Everytime I looked at Davis in the forward line he was leading hard, and looked disappointed when they didn't go to him. For such a good kick you'd think they'd have a little more faith in the fellow, especially since Bazza was dropping everything that came his way.

They kick the ball to Davis as if he's a 6'5" CHF. I recall one when J Bolton passed it to a leading Davis - he was forward of his man, but the ball went high over his head and allowed his opponent to spoil him.

Davis needs the ball to be passed out front for him to run onto it and mark on his chest or lower near his feet, as he demonstrated with his excellent diving mark. Unfortunately we don't have too many who can actually pass that well.

O'Loughlin was at the after match and he said they are not concentrating on Hall must get kick.
They are playing so they have many players to kick goals.
He was very entertaining and great information. Spoke very well. Named all the team players and how they have improved and why. Said how a few of them had spoken to Buchanan and told him what to do including Roos and look what has happened.

Only in the second half - unfortunately when it counted!

I think they kick the ball to a lot of the forwards as though they were 6'5''. Some of the passes to Hall and O'Loughlin today were well overcooked. I certainly agree with your last remark, our passing to leading forwards still leaves a bit to be desired.

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Beat me to it Dimelb, was a crucial loss in the first quarter.

Plus we were always going to struggle in the second half due to the brutal game against the bombers the previous week.

Unfortunately we didn't have enough of a break at half time to ride it out.

                          What are you guys on???

Sure we kicked it to Hall plenty of times but MOL got three goals, and all from set shots. He should have had 5.

And the only one of our forwards to miss out in a low scoring game was ROK, who missed a simple set shot from in front. Even Jolly worked his way down there for two, and we had three excellent midfielders goals to top it off.

Honestly I think some people get way too critical, to the point of actually ignoring the facts. Oh and we won.

The point Shneiderman though is that it can be wasteful to put most of your eggs in the one basket. It looks to me more like an observation than a criticism.

As Magic said yesterday, Baz is second in the comp in goal assists. Going through him to goal seems to work as we keep winning. Both he and Magic are doing well on taking leading marks. Yesterday, the Weagles defense rebounds so fast and well that our forwards mistakes showed up so badly.
