    Contracted/Uncontracted Players

Let's see if we can pool our collective knowledge to construct a list of uncontracted players.

I know that the following players are contracted for 2006:
    Hall
    Spriggs
    Williams
    Jolly
    O'Loughlin
    Saddington
    J Bolton
    Moore
    Goodes

    Out of contract:
    Ball

I think the following players had contracts concluding in 2005, but I don't know if they've resigned:
    N Davis
    McVeigh
    O'Keefe (?)
    C Bolton
    Ablett
    Schmidt
    Erickson
    M Davis

I think the following are in contract, but I can't be sure:
Willoughby (first round picks usually get three year deals)
Schneider (I think he signed a 3 year deal after 2003)
    Kennelly
    Barry
    Kirk (see Schneider)
    Buchanan
Bevan (would have gotten a two year deal after last year)

The following I believe to be out of contract, but I don't expect them to be retained:
    Fixter
    Maxfield
James (one year deals are typical for a recycled draftee)
    Nicks
    Powell
    Sundqvist

I don't have any idea for the following:
    Mathews
    Fosdike
    Doyle
    Schauble
    Dempster
    Crouch
    Roberts-Thomson
    Malceski

Hopefully, by pooling our knowledge in this thread we can come up with a list of uncontracted players. If you can remember seeing a media report (and if you have a link, even better) clarifying the status of any Swans player, please post it in this thread.

I believe Spriggs is on a two year deal and I believe most of our uncontracted players are most of our young kids who have played few/no games. The latest Roosy Responses on the official site has a snippet of info you might be interested in.

      From ASK ROOSY click me

Simon: Are most of the players on the list contracted beyond this season or do a lot come off contract this year?

I]Roosy: We have quite a few young players coming off contract at the end of the season but we are working through getting those guys contracted at the moment[/I]

According to ask Roosy, we do have alot of the younger players off contract this year. IIRC players drafted get 2 year contracts which most likely means Schmidt, M Davis, Malceski, Erickson and Willoughby are coming out of contract

Also add to that James, Powell, Fixter and Spriggs are probably expiring at the end of the year, that is a fairly big list.

I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

          - Willoughby, as a first round draft pick, would have been offered a three year deal. He could, however, have exercised an option to sign a two year deal, which first round picks can choose to do.

          - Spriggs, as a recycled draft pick, is not automatically given a two-year deal. He might have specified one (since recycled players are permitted to specify terms before the draft), but if not then I would be surprised if the club gave him two years. That would be unnecessarily generous.

Spriggs DID specifiy terms and I believe the terms of two years put Carlton off recycling him and allowing him to be recycled by us. Oops

Just to confirm, anyoine drafted in either the National Draft or Pre Season draft are for standard two years.

A AFL de-listed player who is picked up during these two drafts can nominate for more before the draft and the club must meet those requirements (ie Nick Stevens went to the Blues on a 4 year deal).

So Spriggs is with us for another year at least and anyone from the 2003 draft is currently un-contracted unless otherwise signed a deal this year.

Spriggs could only nominate for more than 2 years. That was a rule instigated by the AFL to stop clubs just picking up recycled players for a one year stop gap while passing over younger talent. Evens up the odds a bit.

Carlton took a punt on Betts based on practice game form.

Then I'll move him to the contracted list.

That's not my understanding of the rule. I'm 90% sure that the two year rule doesn't apply to recycled players.

That was the case in the past, but I think recently the AFL changed the rule to try and give the youngsters more of a chance in both drafts.

By a club having to committ to a recycled player for two years this may just stop them from going for the recycled player for just one and then dropping him and thus stopping a youngster from getting a place on a list.

                        that is my understanding too.

Realistically, I expect we are going to keep Fixter. With Nicks, Maxfield, Powell and James are certainty to go. Ball is a huge chance to retire. Maybe one or two to be traded. That is the most we could do with the way we are finishing off the season. Vogels should be promoted. That should leave us with 5-6 spots to be filled by new players.

I am not too sure that Ball is as far gone as we think.

If he gets his body through this year and we finish top four and play a few finals, it is going to be pretty hard for him to give up a guaranteed $150,000 to 200,000 and a shot at a premiership (if he doesn't get it this year).

As for list spots I can't see us going any further than 4 spots.

Maxfield, James & Powell are probably on the block with Vogels to replace the height of James.

The other two spots would probably be Fixter & Sunquist who both just can't seem to get themselves on the field for any length of time.

As for Nicks, I reckon he will be given another 1 year deal just to add to depth and provide an experienced fill in at each end of the ground when needed.

I think if we get to the PF Ball will stick around another year.

And Jude signed a contract this year.

Spriggs can be delisted if he's paid out but his contract must be counted in the 2006 salary cap.
